Hi ,

I remember reading your post but unfortunately I deleted it. Is your son

just starting the diet? How old is he? Dillon had a rough beginning.

It really takes 1 to 2 months for the kids to adjust to the ridged

schedule. Dillon had some really crazy days included wolfing down 4

frozen waffles in his brother's closet! One thing that can cause

increased hunger is if they are still on the same amount of meds. In

deep ketosis Dillon was still starving even though the dr. had said he

shouldn't be because ketosis is a natural appetite suppressant. Try

telling that to Dillon! Turns out the diet caused his Phenobarbital and

depakote levels to increase. Once we dropped the Phenobarbital and part

of the depakote it really helped with the hunger so I would have his

levels checked to see if his levels have increased since starting the

diet. The other thing we did was start a star chart. A star a day for

no cheating and/or begging. Make it really simple at first. 2 days=big

reward (toy store, movie etc..) After a couple weeks we made it 3 then 5

day stars = reward. We showed the chart to Everybody who would look at

it and make a big deal about it. Another thing was to hide all snacks in

containers and put them up. We also got fridge locks. Diet chocolate

soda also helped and we let him drink as much as he wanted. In the

beginning it takes a lot of redirecting and entertaining, going on

outings outside the house. I hope some of these ideas help you. It is

hell in the beginning but the good news is it gets easier and easier.

Dillon came off his star chart on his own...just lost interest. I am

perfectly comfortable leaving him to play downstairs and I don't have to

worry about him cheating. I cheat more then he does now (An extra dab

of butter, one more little piece of bacon). Hang in there. Ariane

(Dillon,6, 11 months ketokid, half the meds, seizure free)

, this won't help you at this minute. But if you have pure liquid

Stevia, and some other no-carb flavorings (lemon, orange) you can always

make a slushy with frozen ice put in the blender or food processor. It

takes a lot of work to eat and seems to satisfy oral cravings. We use the

orange and grape Stevita (which is a keto kool-aide) which we order on-line

from Carbsmart. At times when my son is really starved, I give him two

macademia nuts (two a day are free) wrapped in iceberg lettuce. Another

time, --- just in an emergency -- I made chocolate eggnog with heavy cream,

unsweetened chocolate, stevia, vanilla and eggs, cooked to a custard (in his

ratio), then frozen -- and gave him a few bites. Others might disagree, but

in the beginning, he did just seem to be plain starving. Now there's much

less begging unless there's some visual stimuls -- like someone else's

chocolate cake or pizza -- in which case I sometimes buy him small toys

(like biochenicals) to keep him busy.

We've only been on the diet five weeks, but in the last two, there's been a

noticeable improvement in the hunger factor. Hang on there! IF you don't

have sweetener or keto-friendly flavoring yet -- just crush him some ice and

pour diet soda over it!

Best, Jane

How many meals/day is he getting? It seems like often

they start kids out on three meals/day and it's just

not enough. Can you recalculate to do 4 or 5 meals

(or 4 meals with one split into 2 snacks)? I think

that helps a lot. Let me know if this is an option or

if you need some help with calculating.--D

I've never used Crystal Light, but if your dietician/the Freeman book says

its OK, I'm sure it is. You should measure the slushy the same way you'd

measure his water and substitute the slushy for the water. By the way, you

can also use unsweetened cocoa, heavy cream, and sweetener to make a slushy.

I consider up to a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa a day a " free food " and

you only need about a half a tsp of cocoa to make it taste chocolate. For

my son's cream allotment, I freeze it with sweetener, cocoa, vanilla, and

however much oil I have to " bury " , freeze it and whip it. If you want to

stretch it, puree in some of the water allotment in crushed ice.

When my son has a hot dog -- I stretch a minimal amount of ketchup (you have

to figure it in) with some mayonnaise and serve with a bunch of iceberg

lettuce. My son never ate a bit of lettuce before the diet (or much of any

other green vegetable) but now he eats pizza made with a deep-fried eggplant

crust and keto french fries (eggplant also) and loves it! Small wonders

never cease!

PS> My son just turned 7 last weekend, and before the diet his favorite

foods were hot dogs, mac and cheese, french friesand pizza -- despite the

relatively healthy diet we were constantly trying to foist on him. I

Well, I'd do at least four meals a day, so the

calories would be split four ways, rather than three.

What I do for is calculate four meals for her and

split one of the in half, so she gets breakfast, a

morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner and

then usually macademia nuts right before she goes to

bed. Yes, it does make the meals themselves smaller

-- so it doesn't help with that -- but it does allow

you to offer food more often. He's very small, right

-- one thing that really helps for is that she

gets a lettuce salad with lunch and dinner that helps

fill her up and give her some crunch. I also use only

fruits and vegies that I can use quite a bit of --

strawberries, cantaloupe, zucchini, celery, carrots

(not as many of those) to try to give her as much to

physically eat as possible. Do you have the meal

planner -- it's a huge help -- there's no way I could

do the diet without it.--D

Regina -- Go to www.ketogenic.org. Near the bottom,

there's a link that should take you to the Stanford

meal planner. You can download it for free, but you

need to have Microsoft Excel to run it. You'll

probably need a little help getting started, but once

you're up and running, you'll find that it's really

very easy.

I know the diet seems very overwhelming right now --

but trust me, you can figure it out and get into the

groove with what your son needs. It's sounding to me

like perhaps your dietician is not that helpful? Mine

isn't really either -- nice enough, but only works 3

days/week and doesn't know much about fine tuning.-D

My son did this too. You have to be strong. I know it is hard. Our

diet is a bit different so we were able to give Mike some " freebies "

altho they were still given with meals.

Does he eat jello? You can give this as a " freebie " . And you can make

popsicles with sugar free koolaid for him between meals. You might also

want to go to giving him more smaller meals during the day so it feels

to him like he is eating more.

Hope some of this helps.

hang in there :)

Try doing an eggnog meal and splitting that in half but, add extra water and

some sweetener and flavoring and put over crushed ice. Let him sip on it and

chew the ice every two hours. Eggnog is filling.

Re: HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- I know this seems horribly small -- but

is 7 and on 1100 calories with about 284 per four

meals a day (of course the 3.2 ratio does make a

difference). We don't have a fluid restriction.--D

I think it depends on the dietician and also where the child is - for

example restricting fluids in arizona or florida might not be

practical. We have a fluid restriction too - I dont have any problems

with it tho as we are still trying to reach it (Mike loves water but he

just isnt thirsty on the diet)

Well, first of all, you have to understand that we

live in Arizona, so it would actually be dangerous to

restrict fluids for anyone here in the desert.

But, when we began the diet, my neuro kept quoting an

article, " Myths of the Ketogenic Diet " (he never did

get me a copy). Anyway, he said one myth was that

fluids need to be restricted and that another myth was

that you needed to fast. I take everything he says

with a grain of salt. . . but those were two of my

criteria for beginning the diet. . . no fluid

restriction and no fast. We've never had a problem

with her drinking too much -- but I know others on the

list feel they have seen a correlation.--D
