Guest guest
Terri, There is no medication that has been proven to stop or even slow down the progress of psc. With that said, there are medications that can help alleviate the symptoms in some people. I know that the combination of Lorazepam and Trazadone (two medications used to help me sleep) have almost completely stopped the cholangitis attacks I was having frequently. They are not sure why, but one theory is that my ducts were going into spasms. These drugs also work as antispasmodics. They also help me get more rest so I don't ache all over so much. I take 6-mp to keep my ulcerative colitis under control (and it works pretty well for me). The anitbiotics you take halt cholangitis attacks that could kill you. Urso binds with the bile salts and flushes them out of your system. What other drugs do you take? I know it seems sometimes like our medical treatment is like the little boy with his finger in the dike holding back the flood. And it seems like more and more leaks open up. It does seem like psc runs its course regardless many times. I choose to do everything my doctor tells me to. I figure even their "practicing" of the medical art is more than I can do. I do ask a lot of questions though. I'm still not sure why they do a liver biopsy to check the progression of the disease. It can't tell a whole lot. It takes such a small piece of the liver in one little spot. It doesn't tell you the condition of the whole liver or necessarily how much of it is functioning. The risk of bleeding is also high. Did you ask your doctor what he was looking for? I hope you are feeling better. Have you started your holiday yet? My kids get out of school on Dec. 19th. We are picking up our son at the Salt Lake City, Utah airport Friday night. He has been at school in New York. I am very excited to have him home for a little while. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive to the airport. So we will make a fun outing of the trip and see the Christmas lights at the Morman Temple in Salt Lake City. I think they might be some of the most beautiful lights in USA. We saw them last year and they took my breath away. They have tiny lights woven on all these tree branches. They have beautiful nativity sets (life size) all over and then music from the Morman Tabernacle Choir playing over speakers. I can't tell you how lovely it all is. They only bad thing is the crowds. But the area is quite large. They also have fountains that have water lights floating in them. It is so pretty. I get excited just thinking about going. We are taking my little ones, Jasie 4 and Rylan 2. Whenever Jasie sees something beautiful she says, quite breathlessly, "Oh my, my, my!" We were going through a gift shop at the local mall and she would rush from one display to the other saying that. It was so-o-o sweet. Have you tried having someone massage your back during your pain attacks. I've been having pain episodes since my ERCP and keeping pressure on my back helps somewhat, but much of my pain is in my back. But when it's really bad, there isn't much to help. Ask your doctor what he thinks about the Trazadone (50 mg) and Lorazepam (2mg) as antispasmotic medications. I hope you can find something to help with your pain.
