Guest guest
My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. I have always nebulized it. He is the third doctor to tell me that was not a good idea because it makes the cilia sticky and it cannnot do it's job. So..... He gave me these sites as reputable sources. He agrees with me about unregulated supplements and drugs, but says these sources are well regulated and the best policed. Guest guest
Hi Joyce, I'm a little confused about NAC capsules and NAC tablets. I have always taken the capsules I ordered from Puritan because that is the only place that I have found them and I like the price. O.K. Where do you get your tablets? And what is the difference? Just wondering. . . . Toodles! Jane UIP/IPF 12/1998 Dalton, Georgia aka pianolady_musicgirl>> > My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. I have always> nebulized it. Guest guest
Jane, When there is no FDA regulation on these supplements, manufacturers can put anything they want into a capsule. There are no inspections, etc. They have even found sawdust in them. Evidently the doc feels that the tablet would have less chance of being altered. I wish they would just make it as a prescribed drug with FDA regulations. I would feel much better about taking it. Hugs, Joyce D. Guest guest
Actually it can be bought as a prescribed drug under two forms. So, there are three total ways to purchase it. It is available as a prescribed liquid. Most pharmacies don't stock it but can get it. It has a horrific taste and a smell like rotten eggs and only way most people can take it is with Coke (not Pepsi...ok, Maybe Pepsi would work but I don't know). It is also available by prescription at a compounding pharmacy. These are regulated but obviously could be subject to miscompounding. Generally they don't accept insurance directly and the last time I checked one near me 90 x 600 mg was over $100. The third method is by health food and vitamin suppliers and manufacturers. These range from GMCto the companies Joyce mentioned to Puritan (cheapest of their sites is puritansales.com). Depending on the source 90 x 600 mg can cost from $5-20. These are not regulated any more than any vitamin or health food manufacturer. Can they be trusted? They all say they are the most trustworthy. Some do carry brand names while others do their own manufacturing. Overall I would say the probability is greater to get less medication than purchasd than to get something harmful and since its not a medication key to your survival thats not like ordering Levaquin from Mexico and getting a Placebo. Most of what I've heard ranges from helps with mucus to might be of some good but doesn't hurt. The one exception was the U of Va report which stated that large dosages in mice were found to possibly cause an increase in PH. > > > > > > > > > My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. Guest guest
Joyce I'd never heard of nebulizing it. Is anyone else doing that? As to tablets versus capsules, I'm afraid I don't understand why they would be any more certain to be formulated correctly and I would suspect the taste would be much worse unless a gelcap or something. I've known of tablets being sold that didn't contain what they claimed to. > > > My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. I have always > nebulized it. Guest guest
Bruce, When the nurses brought my meds to me while at the hospital, they told me the NAC tablet was to help protect my kidneys against the medications that I was recieving. Ordering these things through the mail, even at the order of my physician goes against my grain. I am bitter against all the scams played upon the sick and dying in this country by fake supplements and drinks. Everywhere I turn someone is trying to sell me some stupid juice drink with antioxidants, etc. in it that they are told to tell the sick and dying will make them well and healthy. Some of my friends have gotten caught up in selling this stuff. They and others who sell it make lots of money from it by getting others to sell under them. I had one acquaintance that made over $70 thousand a year hawking this stuff. Every doctor that I have asked about any of it has told me..... That stuff makes expensive pee. If you need vitimans at all, a good multivitiman like Centrum will do. All the other stuff is unnecessary. What really bugs me is that these people are trained not to take NO for an answer. They have an answer for everything. They give them CDs to listen to as they drive and as they relax at home. So they are brainwashed into believing in thier spiel. These people who have tried to sell to me would tell me that it would build up my immune system. Even after I patiently explained to them that I was taking a drug costing over $800 a month to suppress my immune system from killing me, they will come up with another reason why this stuff will cure anything. So, the doc tells me that these companies that I mentioned in an earlier post are most regulated. I will do what he says. But, I want FDA approval. I don't understand why this particular drug only comes by prescription in liquid form that smells like ...... well it smells really bad. Hugs, Joyce D. Guest guest
Well, the reason no one works on a tablet or capsule for prescription is that with the price over the counter being as low, then there is no profit in it. You mentioned just taking a good multivitamin like Centrum. It's not regulated as a drug is either. So, at some point, anytime we take anything other than a medicine, we take a chance as to its benefit and as to its risks. I have chosen only to take those things that were directly indicated to make sense to me and then to buy from what I believed to be one of the most reliable sources. However, there is no sure answer. Even foods. I don't eat enough fish. Yet, with our disease there is increased danger in shellfish and in other fish. Levels of mercury or other chemicals that might not have affected the average person could be bad for us. Now thats not why I don't eat enough fish, I just don't like cooking them and storing them and everything. Therefore, I take a fish oil vitamin product. One which is not regulated by the FDA. I'll finish with an extreme situation and not a medication or drug I take. MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, was once a legal prescription drug used primarily by psychiatrists. It was covered and regulated by the FDA so its content was assured. When it started being used recreationally it was removed as a prescription drug (Note: the same action today would eliminate nearly all pain killers and psychiatric drugs as they are all being used recreationally). Now, its obviously only sold on the streets. Make a note that no one has ever died from MDMA and wouldn't unless indirectly as a result of two much activity and exercise and lack of hydration. But people are now dying every day from ecstasy because the manufacturers (drug dealers) are mixing cheaper products and sometimes not even including MDMA, so instead one might get speed or meth or even acid. Now, I'm not proposing making Ecstasy legal but simply showing the most extreme case I know of a regulated vs. unregulated drug. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. Guest guest
If you read the claims made on behalf of NAC and most vitamin supplements they will fix every condition known to mankind. Who knows? Its a choice we just have to make, largely based on the experiences of others we know. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My new pulmonologist told me to begin taking NAC orally. Guest guest
I've had more than one Dr. prescribe NAC from www.puritan.com or as Bruce writes, it's cheaper yet at www.puritansales.com. The price can't be beat...no insurance however. I've used NAC from Puritan for a couple of years...off and on and absolutely no problems. Hope it's the same for others.
