Guest guest
Bennie, thank you for posting the link to the pain document. I read through it and was amazed at what it contained. This would explain why I have been craving protein lately. My name is Bobbie and I am a new member. I wanted to read the posts for a day or so before I posted anything. It is interesting to see what everyone is doing, medication-wise, to help control their pain. My major issue is severe allergies and a dosage sensitivity. I can tolerate a low dosage of a medication better than large ones, providing that I can take the medication at all. Like everyone else, I am very careful about the medications that I take and any new medication that may be prescribed for me. For me, Benadryl causes a very bad reaction: elevated blood pressure, can't breathe, feel like I'm crawling out of my skin, etc. I am limited to Zyrtec for allergic reactions, which tends to throw me for a loop if I take it during the day, so I try to limit it to night time use only. I apologize for the briefness of my first post, but I am currently a student at a local junior college and homework is calling to me. I look forward to getting to know everyone and learning from you all.

Hi Bobbie and welcome to the group. You picked about the quietest time we've had in years to join! Hopefully, any questions you throw at us, will get answered in short order. I was chuckling when I read your comments about Benadryl. It's no wonder doctors don't know what to do with us. I have controlled high blood pressure and Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) doesn't raise it in the least. When I get an itchy, crawly feeling, I use Diphenhydramine to counteract it. Ditto for when my allergies mess with my breathing. What makes my world better, makes your world worse. I don't blame doctors in the least, for looking at all of us pain patients, through rather jaundiced eyes. lol Lyndi Moderator
Guest guest
Hi Lydia, Some days, I think (other days I know) that I'm about as weird as they come when it comes to my allergies. I can't have yellow medicinal dye, but can have yellow food dye without an issue. All steroids are out because within hours, you look at me crossed eye and I'm ready to fight. I have a list that seems to be a mile long of what I can and can not have and carry it with me at all times. My allergies were manageable until I was bit by a brown recluse spider one spring-who would have thought that a little spider could wreak so much havoc on a human system? I know what you mean about doctors looking at pain patients through jaundiced eyes. My current doctor falls into that category, unfortunately. He seems surprised that I am still having pain issues after four and a half years and generally looks at me like I'm crazy when I tell him what's going on with me. He's hesitant to write me a prescription for the amount of Vicodin that would allow me to have a somewhat " normal " day because he's being watched by the FDA for being prescription happy. He has no idea how to treat me and his response is to hand me a prescription for something that I have never tried before and would probably do me more harm than good. Needless to say, I am going to switch doctors at the end of the month because I trust his former partner more than I have ever trusted him. I am looking forward to getting some answers to the questions I have had floating in my head for years now. I appreciate any assistance that you guys can give me because I feel like I've been going through this whole ordeal by myself. My kids understand what's going on with me, but hubby hasn't been very supportive. He thinks that everyone should be able to handle pain the way that he does-grin and bear it, motrin/tylenol takes care of everything-but that isn't always the case with me. My life is basically an open book, so ask me whatever and if I feel uncomfortable with a question, I'll let you know, ok? Thanks in advance. Guest guest
Hi, Bobbie. Glad you joined the group. I know what you mean about the Zyrtec. It makes me drowsy for the daytime. I can only handle it in half-pill doses, and it seems to work for the daytime for now. It is pear tree pollen allergy season here near Greenville. When the Dogwood trees lose their flowers next month, I can go back to clemastine fumarate for dust and dander hypersensitivities. I use 4 different daytime antihistamines, each at different times, and for different reasons, but never all at once. To Bennie, Perhaps this is a reasonable explanation to why prescription pain meds cause me more problems. They can cause dehydration to my sinuses when taken in addition to my allergy meds, and stopping the pain med does cause the " rebound congestion " you suggested. I don't have this problem with sinus meds, but it seems to be the case for pain meds. I have to ask myself, " which do I want more? to move more freely, or to breathe more freely? " Sometimes getting errands done takes top priority over staying home, and the pain meds become necessity. One set of meds for daytime and necessary activities, another set of meds for night time resting and sleeping.
