Guest guest
I have been wanting to answer the young woman considering tubal ligation reversal because she 'desperately' wants children. Long story short--if you are able to care for a disabled child then adopt one rather than creating one....please. I will probably get a lot of flack from some people but you all know it's the unselfish thing to do. __________________________________________________

The family history is very strong. I knew what could happen when my husband and I chose to have children. I also knew that every person in my family with CMT had incredible gifts to share with this world. There are no guarantees on anything in this life. If a couple is healthy there are no guarantees a child will also be healthy. Birth defects happen, genetic code may contain an obscure defect previously unknown, environmental causes can trigger a health problem, a parent can be healthy one day and disabled the next from a car accident. The point is, we all have to make our own decisions on how to live well and be happy and make a difference in the world. For some, the answer will be to not have children. Others will have them knowing the risk. And others yet may look at adopting a " healthy child " (although there is no guarantee on the adopted child's genetic code.) And some may consider this option of adopting a handicapped or disabled child. But please, whatever opinion you have for yourself, offer it up as that. An opinion, not a mandate. Forgive me if I am wrong, I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt here. I just don't know how to interpret this post. I've already written this response over several times. Gail, I respected your view point but when you got to the point saying 'you all know it's the unselfish thing to do.' you are so off base. I'm really glad my Mom didn't share your view. With a disease so unpredictable how can you assume a person's life will not be worth living and cannot contribute. Maybe the doctor who finds a cure for this or another disease will be born with CMT and really understands the disease. Please don't use 'you all know' as if we aren't coming to grip with a reality if we don't agree with you. Ron

It does need to be considered when having a child, CMT in the family or not.

Ruth >> Ruth I understand what you are saying. The importance of this list is to listen to each other and share opinions.. We don't have to agree with each other that would make us stepford CMTers. I find strength to indure each day from most posts. As far as the children go, both decision's are very hard to make. Both can break your heart or not. jenny
