Guest guest
Cheers Richie for letting us know about Rick. Glad to see your home safe and sound Rick mate with your brand new THR. I know you were hoping for a BHR, but you got the next best and it will still make a hell of a difference to you. Your pain will be banished and that's the most important thing. You'll always be a surfer and an inspiration to us all. Your kind words humble me mate. I'm no different to anyone else. We are all pursuing the same goal, weather it be BHR or THR. The more information people have, the better and they should know the pitfalls as well as everything else. Have a speedy recovery Rick and keep us posted. On a personal note, I'm struggling a bit. I am walking worse now than when i was in hospital. I am some bad muscle pain and spasms. More like a stabbing pain in my butt lol, and just below it. I'd laugh but it's so annoying. It's holding me back and is sooooo frustrating more than anything else. I try to tell myself to be patient, but at the moment I can't see a tunnel, let alone a light at the end of it. I'm stuck indoors pottering about the best I can, but it's doing my head in now. Lack of sleep isn't helping either. I can lie in bed for a while with the pillows between my legs, but one false move and wham......and I can't get comfortable lying on my back either. I must thank my wife and kids. They've been so patient and a great help. I couldn't manage without them. It's them who are keeping me going right now and I can't praise them enough. I haven't heard from anyone regarding why it happened still, and that still makes me so mad. I haven't been in touch with anyone yet (MMT, or my doc). I will only blow a fuse if I do, so I'll leave it till after the holidays. Sorry for moaning on to you all, but I'm in that mood right now. Be healthy folks and have a good 2002. I'll keep you informed. PS. Saying all that and moaning as much, I'd still do it all again and go for a resurface. I agree with Rick. If you qualify, a resurface is a must. People who are still unsure as to a resurface or a THR need certifying. There is no comparison in my eyes. My right hip feels fantastic and has had to put up with a lot of strain due to the left. Cheerio for now. -- Msg From Rick West.failed resurfs Guys n gals, here is a message from Rick West. It seems he is having problems posting to Surf Hippy. Hello, I just returned from my surgery in Los Angeles... when I was there I met two patients who just had surgery, one the same day as mine, the other the day after... FWIW, one of these patients was a young man (30 years old) who had a failed Conserve C+.. he originally dislocated his hip in 1995, subsequently developed AVN, had it resurfaced in 1998... it failed some months ago; exactly how many I'm not sure of... the AVN in his femoral shaft had undermined the fixation of his resurface component... when I met him, Dr. Amstutz had just given him a metal/metal, total hip revision, having left the original resurface acetabulum cup in place... to me, it seemed interesting that the other patient, a 40'ish Florida dude who received a resurface, as well as the Virginia guy who had a revision on his failed resurface, had never heard of the Surfacehippy support forum... my point being, there is probably substantial data out there regarding resurfacing that we don't hear about here in Surfacehippy... at this point, I would especially like to thank Gaz for taking the time to write Surfacehippy for details after he had his failed resurfacing revised... glad they didn't have to resort to THR Gaz... Gaz, you're an amazing person... for you to take the time and effort to share, under these extenuating cirmstances: your kindness continues to leave me in awe!... hey, everyone out there, keep fighting the good fight. Yours truly, Rick West PS I still firmly believe in resurfacing as the best alternative (where the patients bone condition warrants) to THR. Guest guest
I'd be interested in hearing a lot more from Rick or the patients he described re the failures. I hope he gave them the information so they can get onto the site. I, like Rick, also think surfacing is a great alternative to THRs, but would like to see a lot more trustworthy data re the performance of our parts and the complications that can result from the operation, such as leg length discrepancy. So much of this stuff is anecdotal, and I think a lot of the people who do have problems may not know about the boards, or feel comfortable confessing them in the midst of all the evangelism. I agree that everyone needs to feel free to post the good and the bad. I am looking for any and all information. If we know potential " not so good " things that could happen we won't be quite so bummed out if it happens to us. We also need to know how to deal with such things should they happen. Also, when troubles are posted they need to be said in such a way as to hopefully not scare people off. I've found that it seems a majority of surfers are very knowledgable, pro-active people who would take care in this way. Forewarned is forearmed...always. So.. bring it on if there is much of anything to bring on!! Trudy
