Sounds about the same for me. I can eat a whole sandwich and maybe a few

chips. The meats are what you have to be conscious of. I too snack all day

long and never get that full feeling. I wish I could go back to a small

pouch again.

To me, and I'm no expert, that sounds like what it should be? I have a

feeling that for most of us, the problem isn't meals its between um! So I

just drag it out . . .

Gosh Beth--

I could have sworn that was me talking....the only difference is that I can

also put down a small salad with that sandwich. I too can eat much less of a

chicken dinner than I can the other foods. And I've learned how to graze,

since the malnutrition had become such a grave situation. But like you, the

snacking doesn't satisfy. Just wish that I could learn what satiety is vs

the awful pain, cramping and nausea I've been experiencing lately...

No, I'm afraid it doesn't work that way for me....For breakfast this morning,

I had two slices of toast, regular bread, with a tsp of all-fruit on each,

one tsp of cottage cheese on each and about 6 strawberries. I think that's a

bit much for someone 4 months post-op, don't you? I feel painfully full

after eating that, but about 20-30 min later I can eat again.

For lunch today I settled down with 4 animal crax and an apple, didn't think

that I was quite hungry enough to eat a real lunch. Then after I finished

those, I was looking for more food (mentally maybe, not physically). So, I

made myself 1/2 a meatloaf sandwich, leftover from last night's dinner. I

still didn't feel that horrible pain, so naturally thought I was hungry. I

settled for a cup of decaf coffee and then a cup of tea...then the pain and

cramping hit. Too much?

It doesn't sound like too much to me physically, salad gets really

small inside . . . I don't think the quantity sounds out of line. I can eat

much more than I actually do at each sitting. My surgeon says the feeling of

fullness is actually the stomach being stretched and each time we stretch it,

it takes more food to repeat the sensation. So ideally we stop eating short

of feeling full . . . what is funny is that is the seven secrets philosophy .

.. . eat to satisfaction, never fullness.

I was sick for a day and couldn't eat a thing for about 30 hours.

When I tried to eat agin my stomach was so darn small . . . it took a week to

feel normal again.

Vicki, this sounds pretty " typical " for my eating habits! I can get FOUR

meals out of one at a restaurance....talk about a " cheap date! " LOL

The good news is, your stomach is emptying properly! The bad news is, you

shouldn't eat that much . . . being able to and doing it are two different

things. I could do it, but I would be in pain or painfully full as you said!

I don't " graze " but have PLANNED times to eat. This is because I am not

hungry, was not eating and losing still too much too fast. I HAVE to have

set time to eat or I don't. Doing much better now. Was cautioned by

nutritionist that grazing tends to stimulate the appetite too much. Just my

two cents.

Like yours, mine is an expert at dealing with problematic wls patients.

Unfortunately, he received his baptism of fire with my case first. He's very

astute and takes absolutely nothing for granted, yet he's conservative and

doesn't panic. My medical team is a very good mix. I'm sure that I'll get

some answers, at least some ideas, when I see him tomorrow.

As far as things like chips, they are off my menu for good as I can't deal

with the fat---dump city!! But like you, I do crave them every now and

again. Once vivid pic of me rolling around on my bed, tearing off my clothes

on the way down the hall in a cold sweat is enough for me to say " no " LOL

That's my whole point! I really think this is too soon to be able to eat so

much. I'm sure that there is something wrong with my pouch for it to be able

to hold so much. As far as the all-fruit, all it is is fruit with juice, no

sugar. Tastes less sweet, but I actually prefer the taste of the fruit. It

also counts as a fruit exchange on the diabetic diet--I learned this in my

pre-surgery, diabetes days--so I figure that I'm getting in a fruit as well.

Give it a try, it really is good.

So, do you really think I'm just overstuffing? I didn't think that I should

be able to get that much down this soon after surgery without vomitting it

(or at least some of it) back up.

Well, Gang, You're not going to believe what I eat (and it ain't cats). The

beauty of Dr. Marcus' BPD is a larger stomach and more malabsorbtion. I eat

about 2000-2,500 calories a day with about 40-50% of the calories from fat,

30-40% from protein and 10-20% from CARBS. That's about 111 grams of fat, 50

grams of CARBS and 200 grams of protein. I exercise at a gym and swim 2-3

nights a week and I am really not gaining any weight. The 4-5 pounds that I

have put on are from lifting weights. I am cutting back on some of the fat to

adjust for some steatorea (fat-filled bowel movements). CARBS and fiber give

me gas and diarrhea so no potatoes, salads, veggies, or fruit. I take 6

specially prepared vitamins every day and eat as much protein as I can. I

also avoid all sugar. I work with a nutritionist too.

Here is a typical day of eating for me:

Breakfast:

1 bagel toasted and then the inside hollowed out to get rid of a lot of the

dough and the CARBS. I use real butter on it and a lot.

2 eggs and sausage (or a breakfast square that I make from sausage, ground

turkey, shredded cheese and 8-9 eggs. Mix it and some other ingredients all

up and bake it then cut it into squares and pop them in the microwave as I

want to eat one)

1-2 cups of coffee with nondairy creamer and sweet and low.

Lunch

I bring a lot of food to work and munch all day. Tuna salad, chicken, ham,

etc. Tomorrow I will have 2 portobello mushrooms that I stuffed with sausage

onions and ground turkey and baked with cheese, some ham salad (12 oz

container) I made, and about 14 oz of chicken strips that I sauteed in a

little soy and sesame oil. I'll also bring a container of my protein drink

and a couple of Atkins protein bars. I also will bring a sandwich made with

lite rye (10 grams of CARBS/slice) and bologna and cheese with mustard. I'll

eat it a quarter at time over the course of the afternoon.

Dinner

salmon, tuna, etc. I don't eat red meat or veggies other than some broccoli

or cauliflower and of course mushrooms and I don't eat fruit. Too many

carbs/sugar. Oh, and vitalady - I don't drink milk. I may use a little heavy

cream in some recipes, but not often.

I snack on some sugar-free cookies, but have to be careful since they have a

lot of CARBS, just no sugar.

Golly, this post really made me hungry. Gotta go snack!

Sure. I do all the cooking and grocery shopping at home. I still love to go

to the supermarket. Its my comfort place. I am now able to cook, and even eat

without fear that I will be 410 pounds again. I was afraid that this surgery

would destroy my best friend -- food. I found that I have a better friend --

me. I can now have an adult relationship with my friend food and not let it

kill me.

Vomiting isn't really easy with RNY . .. it usually just stays and makes

you suffer until it leaves your pouch. I think the 2 surgeries are just so

different that you need to slow down and adjust . . . MHO

Every once in a while, I can get a few chips before that sandwich, but not very

often do I allow myself potato chips. I don't like the greasy taste anymore,

but

I do crave for one now and then.

Hopefully the gastroenterologist will be able to find the problem that's going

on

for you. I've got a good one less than half-hour from where I live that's used

to

dealing with RNY patients, so he knows what he's looking at when he sees the

stapling and anastomosis during an endoscopy. During my colonoscopy, he

found a lipoma (fatty tumor which is quite harmless), but he wants me to repeat

the colonoscopy which I don't like. It's only the prep that I don't like, the

test is a

breeze!

Gosh, didn't realize you were on 4 months post-op from the RNY. After the

revision, I was back down to eat " miniscule " amounts again. It's only after

5-1/2 years with the RNY that I can eat this much.

Two pieces of toast is my usual breakfast, but on workdays I take a bagel with

me to work also, and start crunching on that at 9 a.m. I can eat the whole

bagel

with no problem (no cream cheese, seems to upset something or my tastes

have changed?!).

El, you can tolerate the " All-Fruit " jelly/jam? Haven't tried that one, but eat

the

Smucker's Jelly with the Nutrasweet in it. I've just discovered mixing cinnamon

with nutrasweet and it's almost like my cinnamon toast that I used to eat!!! I

missed my cinnamon toast SOOOOOO much! But it's strange that Nutrasweet

doesn't contain " sodium " per se, but I'm always thirsty after my cinnamon toast.

Why?

I find that I eat small amounts, but I eat frequently. Sometimes I think

that I should try to eat more at a sitting but not graze so much. On one

hand I think the body requires a certain amount of good nutrition and this is

why I graze. On the other hand I can see that it is slowing my weight loss.

I still have another 30 pounds to go.

Perhaps we need to choose our snacks differently. In other words, instead of

snacking on low fat crackers, veggies, fruit, etc., perhaps we need to snack

on a bit of protein which might satisfy us more long term. I am not a

proponent of high protein diets because we need all kinds of things for

proper nutrition, but we need enough protein to maintain healthy cell

development.

Vicki makes a good point. We really shouldn't eat to the point of fullness.

We should decide our portion in advance. For breakfast I usually have one

slice of toast and a little cottage cheese, tuna, an egg, cheese, or whatever

protein on it and a little fruit. Because I have trouble at night eating a

main meal, I try to eat it at lunch because I tolerate it at lunch. But

again, I can only eat a relatively small portion and end up grazing during

the day. For dinner I usually eat very little, something akin to breakfast.
