But I am scheduled for hip resurfacin in February in Sarasota, Florida with Dr. Kennedy. Can you be a little more specific on your exercises? I was told that there is no rehab after wards. Thanks so much. Diane
Guest guest
Diane, Absolutely not true that you don't need physical therapy after surgery! I don't know how this idea gets around and I'm dismayed when I hear that a OS hasn't prescribed it. A great deal of atrophy has certainly occurred between your initial decline from reduced activity and surgery. The chief areas to work on are your abductors and ballance. You should ask your OS and if he doesn't seem interested, insist on speaking to someone in the physical therapy department at the hospital. Dr. Mont has his patients start the next day with both physical therapy and occupational therapy (dealing with day to day things, really). He then prescribes at home PT until you can get to a PT clinic. Because I want to get back to squash, tennis and running, and had some bone density loss from dysplasia, he had me on some serious PT for 12 weeks. I will speak with Dr. Kennedy's PA, because I am quite motivated. I had to drive home a few days after surgery, but my own orthopedist refers to a physical therapy group and I can have one of the therapists speakd with him to get the caveats post surgery PT> Diane

Well.... Some orthos only prescribe a few weeks worth and some people don't do that. Muscles and ligaments are a strictly use it or lose it proposition. If you were a mess before resurfacing, do a lot of exercises afterwards and you'll be *very* happy with the results. I do lots and at 4 months post-op am in the best shape of my life and having a blast. As long as there are no extenuating circumstances, the more you do, the better you'll feel. --$.02 >Thanks so much. >Diane > > >
