Ronan started having his first signs at about 4 months (dev. delay

and failure to thrive). He never had any stridor until about 5 to 6

months. It started very gradually and wasn't nearly as loud as it is

now. It seemed to get worse until he was about 8 months old and

hasn't really changed since then. I guess I wouldn't really say it

sounds " raspy " , it is not " wet " sounding at all not like a wet cough

or wheezy chest. it sound like it is more from the upper airway

almost " honking " sound. People always comment about me taking him

out with a cold so I guess to everyone else it sounds like a cold or

asthma. I definetly remember that it started later because that is

kind of backward. Usually stridor occurs in new borns and then they

out grow it, Dougald had mild stridor. Also remember, stridor is a

sigh of gastric reflux as well. It was while we were in the hospital

the very first time with Ronan when the doc's heard his stridor and

decided it might be possible that he had reflux. They went ahead and

did the reflux test .

's stridor developed at a very early age, and while it did tend to increase with any secondary illness or bad weather conditions, it was generally fairly constant. We believe the anti -convulsants made it worse, because the tend to increase the amount of mucus and make it harder to deal with as well.

very rarely struggles with it now (may be 1-2 times a year), and it is generally associated with secondary illness. D.M.G. (there was a complete drying up of the "rattles" within 3-4 days of introducing this supplement -checkout www.kirkmanlabs.com ) and getting him off anti-convulsants were the keys. When he was younger, it was so bad, that it was difficult to take him out socially with us, as it was very off putting for other people around us, especially those who did not understand his situation.

A question about stridor??

What exactly is stridor? Is it the gurgly sound in the throat, the secretions

that sit on the epiglottis? My daughter has this chronic gurgle, has always

had it. She is on DMG, but tit did not clear up. In fact, it has been pretty

bad the past five days. We finally figured out she is cutting her 5 yr

molars! She has always gotten extra gurgly when cutting teeth.

I wouldn't really describe as a gurgle. It is like a long, slow sucked in noisy breath. Sounds almost a little bit like the way kids sound with croup but not quite. It is very hard to explain. It is a nasty sound in that it sounds as if they can't get that breath in, like something has collapsed in their throat. I hope this makes some sense.

Stridor is not usually a wet or gurgly sound, it is more a dry raspy sound, that

comes from obstruction in the air way, that is typcially anatomical rather than

from wetness or secretions. My middle child used to have a lot or respiratory

stridor that came from swelling with angio edema, as well as related to her poor

respiratory control. Her air way was more floppy than normal and it tended to

obstruct more easily.

Stridor is frequently associated with inflammation in the airway, that causes

obstruction.

I found the stridor page usind MSN search on the word stridor the

last time this came up. sighs when he breaths out (almost a

pant) and I was trying to see if he had this.
