Guest guest
Does anyone know if the BHR is being done in USA? Thanks. Tom
Guest guest
I asked the same question of McMinn during my surgeries in July. According to McMinn there have not been any Birmingham Hip Resurfacings, as we know them today, done in the USA. Amstutz implanted 50 or so " McMinn " hips (according to JRI outcome data) early on, but abandoned them for many of the same reasons McMinn eventually did. The geographically closest location for a BHR may be Canada. Midland Medical has been making in-roads there and I believe Canadian doctors have been training in the UK for some time. As for the USA, I had 4 surgeons from New York watch my first BHR in July. Unfortunatly, I don't know their practice or names.
Guest guest
There have been 5 distinct " generations " of English resurfacing devices. The McMinn device was one of the early iterations (gen 1 or 2). It was prone to acetabular loosening and was abandoned. The primary differences between the current BHR (gen 5) and McMinn device is the presence/type of bone in-growth backing used and the metallurgy. The Conserve Plus is most similar in construction to the 3rd generation of the BHR. Again, the primary differences are acetabular backing and metallurgy. Either Walter or Swains could provide better technical comments on this than I can.
Guest guest
The primary difference between BHR generations 3 & 5 was sintered vs. forged bone in-growth backing.
