I had over 3/4 of an inch discrepancy and have had lifts put on pumps, Keds, dressy sandals, workout shoes, etc. I wouldn't suggest wearing anything really strapless or baring (you'll get the lecture about how you need shoes with good support, etc.). Surprisingly, although they will look somewhat cluncky to you, no one ever noticed the lift on mine unless I was walking on a hard floor. Only then because they noticed the difference in the sound.
