, I'm not struggling too

much with the diabetes at the

present. Apart from the odd spike,

my BGs are in the range 70 - 130, &

my latest HbA1c was 6.3%. No

questions, then, but if I had, I

know I would find the answers here!

Welcome!

First of all, if you haven't already, I'd look into a Diabetes Education

class at your local large hospital and/or your county's health department.

Second, there are two books I would heartily recommend: " Dr. Bernstein's

Diabetes Solution " and " Diabetes for Dummies: A Reference Guide for the Rest

of Us. " Both should be available in any good bookstore, or (if your town

doesn't have any good bookstores!) online from Amazon.com or some similar

website.

Your carb rate seems rather high. My doctor told me that I should cut my

carbs back to the absolute minimum. White foods, I was told, are 'the

enemy'--white rice, white pasta, white bread, potatoes, etc. should no

longer exist for me.

About the drug effects, I can't say, as I don't take them (yet!)

Hi to everyone. I have been reading the posts for a week now and

decided to introduce myself. I am Rose from Kansas. I was diagnosed

last week and started on Glucophage and Neurontin. I met with the

diabetic educator today to set up a basic meal plan to follow. Right

now nothing tastes good. My mouth feels like it has a slick, dry

coating on it that is awful. I also feel like I am in a light fog

most of the time. I was set up with 45-60 grams of carbs per meal

and 30 grams for evening snack. I do not snack in the morning or

afternoon because I work outside the home and never take the time and

I am not hungry. This seems like a lot of carbs - I am used to

eating 20-30 unless I have a chip binge. My A1c was tested at 6.1

and I am not doing any kind of self testing. I see the doctor again

in a month. Is this normal for diabetics to eat this many carbs? Is

the nasty taste normal side effect of the medication? If so, how

long before I get past this? Right now I feel very overwhelmed and

still adjusting to the idea that I am diabetic. One minute I cry and

the next I see this as a blessing to help me feel better then I am

crying again. Is this normal for this stage or am I just

overreacting to everything right now? I could use some support and

encouragement.

Bruce. Thanks for suggesting the Diabetics for Dummies. I really like that

one. I went out and got it the same day I read it, from you I did not get the

other one because I could not remember the name. Thanks for posting it again.

Appreciate it.

Welcome Jan, I just recently joined the group about two weeks ago

and you will find many friends who know what you are feeling and going

through. You can vent, get support and feel good knowing that you

are understood and know that people will be there when you need them

and when you don't. I have been in chronic pain for 14 years so I

know what your going through. I'm glad you joined our group.

I look forward to many conversations with you.
