Guest guest
UNOS Statement Regarding Alonzo Mourning’s Transplant The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) expresses best wishes to basketball legend Alonzo Mourning, who received a kidney transplant on Friday, Dec. 19, and to his cousin, who served as his living kidney donor. Living donation saves and enhances many lives, accounting for more than 40 percent of kidney transplants in the U.S. last year. UNOS supports and encourages living donation while striving to ensure the best possible outcomes for recipients and donors alike. The greater need, however, remains for lifesaving organs from deceased donors. UNOS coordinates the matching of organs from deceased donors with recipients under federal contract to operate the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). We hope the public attention devoted to Mr. Mourning's transplant will serve as a reminder of the benefit of transplantation and the continuing need shared by the nearly 84,000 men, women and children awaiting a transplant nationwide. Everyone can help to meet this need by making and sharing a commitment to Donate Life.
