Does anyone know what it means to have elevated

3-methylglutaconic acids in urine

3-hydroxy butyric acid in urine

Thank you very much.

Hi Liz,

The kids have high 3-hydroxybutyric acid. It had to do with the

mitochondrial disorder and metabolism if I'm not mistaken. Not sure about

the other one. One may have too much of that too. I know one of the kids

had too much of some amino acids and not enough of others. I think the doc

said it had to do with their diet. No one seemed concerned.

Liz - I know this probably sounds like a cop-out answer, but they are just

signs that a mitochondrial, or other metabolic problem, is present. There's

not really anything they can do to treat them - and there is no evidence

that they actually cause damage. Well, at least this is what I was told

when I asked the metabolic doc the exact same question! ;)

Liz:

I know it has something to do with ketones as my daughter's 3-hydroxybutyrate

is undetectable it is so low. All I know is that something is not working

'right' from fatty acids to her acetoacetate/betahydroxybutyrate or ketones.

I hope I haven't confused you.
