Hello Everyone,

As we know, the medical community considers the most common cause of

pancreatitis to be excessive alcohol use. In all journals, reference

books, etc., it is reported that 85 to 90 percent of all cases are

caused by alcohol. Where do they obtain these numbers? Do they come

from physicians, patient's charts, or hospital reports? If they come

from physicians, these numbers could be off considerably. The reason

I say this is because there are so many physicians and medical

personnel who believe we are all closet drinkers. I would love to

see a poll that is answered only by sufferers of pancreatitis,

because I have read very few messages where alcohol was the cause.

This is true not only for this board, but for many more pancreatic

boards. I realize that only a small percentage of people with

pancreatitis post on any board, but I still believe the numbers may

be smaller than is reported. If the medical community thought there

were less cases caused by alcoholism, maybe there would be more

research done on the disease.

Unfortunately for the board, I am a why person and I think of all

kind of weird questions. If this bothers people, just tell me to

hush.

Vicky, here's one of your first poll answers - Pepsi drinker. Never had a

beer. Have had probably 12 to 15 " fluff " drinks (brandy alexandar at

Christmas or Ameretto sour) during my 52 years on this earth. But, I still

get " the look " when the doctors ask if I'm a drinker. Why ask if they're not

going to believe the answer?

Hello Helen,

First of all, I love your name. Thanks for your reply. I believe

the hardest thing most of us drink is some kind of cola. Mine is

root beer.

I will have you in my thoughts and prayers Friday. Please try to

think positive and try not to be afraid. When I wrote afraid it made

me think of the first bible verse I learned. During a thunderstorm,

when I was about two, my grandmother taught me this verse from Psalms.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Now when I become

afraid, I say this verse to myself and immediately I feel better. It

reminds me to turn my fears and trouble over to the Lord. I just

thought this may help you. I know that you will do great Friday.

Thanks, Vickie. I'll try to remember that as I walk into the hearing room

tomorrow. The closer it gets, the more jumbled my thoughts are. My biggest

hope is that when I leave that room tomorrow, that I'll feel that I've done

my best. I'm also hoping for a good outcome, of course, but I've had so many

times when I'd wished I'd said this or that (or wished I hadn't said this or

that). I just want to be clearheaded enough to do my best and for once show

how I'm really feeling instead of putting on a good, happy face.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Helen
