Hello Everyone....

I just got home from the hospital this afternoon. I was in for three weeks

this time. I had a complication though. My Infuse A Port became infected

(staph), so the port had to come out. The Dr. tried to place a groshong on

the opposite side, but he couldn't. The point where the vessels connect was

completed occluded. He placed an EJ IV, and took me back into the OR on

Wednesday of this past week. He wanted to make sure the cultures were

negative, and they were Wednesday Morning....it was after the Groshong was

finally placed that they found the staph. So, I was on a week of IV

Vancomycin, and am home on Doxyciclene and Rifampin.

I am feeling a bit better, just exhausted. I am sure that will go away in

time.

I'd like to thank B. for updating y'all for me. I really appreciate it

;o).

I hope everyone is feeling well. I am trying to catch up on the digests, but

that is a full time job!! ;o) I will try and get caught up as best as I can

though ;o).

Hugs,

Robin

Hello Robin,

I am so glad that you are home from the hospital and I am happy to

see you posting, again. I am sorry that you had complications during

your stay in the hospital. Do you know why your port became

infected? has had a port for over a year now and sometimes I

worry that it may become infected especially right after it has been

flushed. In fact, she will have it flushed tomorrow. So for the

next few days, I will be a little uneasy. But so far, we have not

had any trouble with it at all.

I have been so worried about you. I hope you will be able to stay

out of the hospital for a while. I know that you feel the same way.

If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know. You know

that you can e-mail me at anytime.

I will close for now and head back to bed. The last two days have

been horrendous. The pain will not go away. Oh well, maybe tomorrow

I will feel better.

Robin,

We are so glad you made it home safely. I think that obtaining IV access is

the one thing that makes the maintenance of this disease so difficult. I

thought I might mention to folks who aren't sure that an EJIV is an external

jugular IV. It means the doc had to start an IV in that big vein that is on

the side of your neck. Not fun at all. I think that many people may get

somewhat complacent about sterile technique and the care of the IV's. I know

I probably did. I know that many of the nurses definitely do. I really

dislike it when a nurse sticks the IV tubing or needle in her mouth to take

off the cap before hooking you up. I have to keep telling my home care nurse

to please not to that. Having an infection in one of your direct access IV

lines is very serious, particularly staph infections. I am so happy, Robin

that your staph infection was sensitive to IV Vanc. It is difficult when you

have a vancomycin resistant IV Staph infection. Welcome home, Robin. You

input has been missed.

Hi Vickie,

I don't know how it became infected, although, being in the hospital is not

the cleanest place in the world! It was fine when I went in...it was while I

was there that it got infected. Best advice I can give you, and I know this

isn't easy is not to worry about 's port unless there is a reason to

worry. If it is looking okay, she isn't complaining about anything, then

chances are, things are okay. You really have to worry about infection when

it is accessed a good deal of time. Talk to the nurse that flushes the port,

and ask her to explain to you what specifics you need to look for. Hope this

helps.

I am exhausted to say the least. Another thing that happens to me from time

to time when I am sick is that I wake up in a cold sweat, and that happened

this morning. I sometimes feel like I am never going to get better. But I

know this will pass. I hope so anyway ;o).....

I hope you are doing okay and the pain that you are feeling passes soon. If

I can do anything, please let me know.

Hugs,

Robin

Hi Karyn,

You are so right...they are very serious, and scary for the person going

through it. Last year, I had one that the Dr. said if I did not respond to

the IV Vanco, I was in serious trouble!! Thankfully, I did then, and I did

this time. I was told that they type of staph I had, was an easily treatable

one this time.

I am having a hard time this morning. I don't know why for sure, but I am.

I think it is from being in the hospital for three weeks, and just being

sick. All I know is I want just one normal day in my life!!!!!!!!! I am

sure you and the others can relate to that.

Thank you again Karyn. I have missed being here.

I have this symptom also. It happens intermittently, it seems like there is

no direct cause-effect relationship. I can't imagine what might cause it

except something going on with body chemistry or hydration imbalance. It's

not anything but uncomfortable and a little surprising so I don't think it's

a big deal, anyone else had this symptom or have any idea as to cause or cure?

I have had this happen several times but I've always thought it was

from the pain meds. I asked my doc about it and he said that was the

cause.

Thank you Karyn, I now know that I am not the only one who knows that putting

the iv tubing or needle in her mouth to take the cap off before hooking you

up is sooooooooooooooo wrong. Thanks for letting me know that I am not

abnormal about this dangerous practice for making the patients very ill.

Hi Robin, I hope you feel better real soon. I know how you feel and I wish I

could help everyone in this group alleviate this terrible disease. It takes

so much from us emotionally, mentally and physically. Our families suffer

with us also and I am so sorry for that. It's hard to have a normal life.

Those who are well don't have a clue what this disease is really like and

what it takes from our lives. This was meant to be an upper not a downer.

So feel better real soon Robin. We are thinking about you and we are glad

that you are back. Shirley

Thank you Becky!! I only wish this was the real world for me!! I am glad

that at least I have IV access with the Groshong, BUT, I have to go to the

hospital every three days for a dressing change, which is the pits! I

sometimes wonder if I will ever have a normal life!

Sorry, I am feeling very sorry for myself, and I need to snap out of it soon.

I am just having a hard time of it though. I know I have only been home for

two days, and spent three weeks in, but I am just having a hard time coping.

Y'all are wonderful people.
