oh shit!! ((((((nancy!)))))))))))))) i am sooooo sorry jenna!! what a crummy

experience!

Back from the Dentist...oh what fun...

well, back from the dentist, and it was not a fun

time at all...right off the bat, the nurse came out

to get us and what does she do? touches jenna's hair..

which i told them NOT to do...STUPID PEOPLE!!!!

so then jenna didn't want anything to do with the

chair..so i ended up holding her on my lap, and

laid her on the dentist, and he looked in her mouth

for about a minute, while jenna was fighting the

whole time...So we are gonna have surgery done,

on january 31...that's the only way he's gonna be

able to do anything..he's not exactly sure what

all needs to be done, but she does have cavaities,

and does need 2 baby teeth pulled...he will do

xrays, when she has the surgery...he said he can

do everything all at once...which i guess is a

good thing....poor baby...so now i have 2 months

to worry about this...I know this is something

she has to have done, but it still worries me

having her put out. So that was my day..how

was yours?????

nancy....still needing a sedative.... ;)

Hang in there, Sweetie... has to be sedated every year to get

dental work done. First time's the worst...after you see how it

works it gets a bit less stressful, and there isn't any other way to

do it.

They take in, give him a quick shot that knocks him out, and

that is it...way easier on him than trying to do anything while he is

awake (NOT gonna happen).

If I can answer any questions about it, feel free...

yes...very crummy....i really thought

these people knew how to handle these

kids...cause i've heard from some parents

they are wonderful...but, all kids are

different...i just wish they would respect

what i had said about touching her hair..

things may have had been different then.

how was he went he woke up? and what did he have done?

like a cavatie filled? and did he mess around in his

mouth afterwards...she has soooo many sensory issues..

i think she gonna have her hand in her mouth alot

more after this...how about caps? does he have those,

and if yes..does he mess with them? but on the

other hand im thinking, maybe once this is taken

care of, she will feel better, cause maybe its

hurting alot, and she just can't tell me?...and what

i really need to know is how long does it take for

him to wake up? and how was he on the way home and

at home then? ---too many questions?? ;)

thanks much!!!!!!!

We did this when was 4 or 5. His teeth were horrible. He was

sedated which was simple and quick, and while he was out they did 4

root canals, 9 caps, 4 more fillings and sealants on what they

could. He woke up, was crabby/clingy for a day or two, his mouth

seemed to not be bothering him anymore and we didn't have to have any

work done for about 4 or 5 years and by then he was able to deal with

it. There are kids that our dentist sees that he sedates once a year

for cleaning and everything else they need. If that is the only way

you can do it, it's worth it to have it done and over with and not be

unduly stressful for the child.

Well now that the first part is over take a deep breath and try not

to worry too much. (I know easier said then done). I'm sorry it

went so bad. If you told them not to touch her hair they should have

listened. I really don't know what else to say because I haven't

been there yet. I'm not looking forward to the day either! I hope

your able to calm down a bit too!

yea, the first part is over..now i guess

i know what to expect, little better...

alittle advice for you...try and get Mark

to brush his teeth, even if he hates it...

jenna doesn't like it at all..and now we

are paying for it...i should of been more

consistent with doing it...

nancy....who is having rachelle brush ALL

the time ;) but she loves it, which is

nice...

Double ACK! They should know better.

Um, if I had any sedatives, I wouldn't be sharing right now. I need

them for myself. ;o)

She'll be okay, and it will be much better with her being out. She

won't feel a thing that way and it will be over and done before she

knows it.

I think you asked me the same things about but I don't know if

I ever answered them.

woke up within 15 min to half hour. She was a little sleepy for

about 45 min to an hour but able to walk just fine. She played

quietly that afternoon, but not 'that' quietly. The dentist did an

excellent job with the sedation.

Oh <<<>>> and <<<Jenna>>>

Sedation dentistry. A fact of life for us.

I will say however that seeing how well Jake did with sedation during

his MRI, I'm not as worried about doing the dentist thing anymore. I

guess I should look into that pdq. I think they have really perfected

sedation in the past several years.

It'll be OK....

No such thing as too many questions. :-) I remember the first time

I had to do this...dreading it is absolutely the worst part. If you

want a real time version of this year's visit, go to the June

archives...I'm pretty sure I whined about it on here beforehand, and

cheered about it after...

Okay...brutal honesty here...The first time we did this,

didn't really do well...they had given him valium before the

appointment to calm him down (thinking that it would settle him

enough that they could get him into the chair and poked without other

help...hahahahaha). He got very sick to his stomach coming out of

the anesthesia...we had a pretty rough time. The second year, they

left off the valium, just brought him into the room, gave him a quick

shot (which they had ended up doing last year anyway) that knocked

him out in less than a couple of minutes, and he did GREAT...no major

problems at all. So, if they give her a med she reacts badly to, you

could have a bit of a tough time...otherwise, it should go very

well. NOTE---MOST kids don't react to the meds...so don't get

stressed about that...just know it's a possibility and be prepared

(towels, change of clothes, second adult for the ride home).

They do cleaning, x-rays, fillings, sealants...whatever he needs.

The first time takes the longest because they are catching up with

problems...from then on, it takes much less time because they are

staying up with things. He doesn't have any caps--just a mouthful of

fillings...so I don't know about those.

This year, it took about 15-20 min to wake up...and then he

was still groggy (needed help walking)...took him out to the waiting

room when he seemed steady, but had to wait there a few minutes

because he vomited (inherited his mom's inability to handle general

anesthesia). They won't release a child until they are sure they are

stable and okay to go home. Anyhoo, after a bit of a rest, we took

him home...he slept for a couple of hours, and then was pretty much

back to normal--no more nausea, not groggy, not in any discomfort

that we could see.

He did have a bit of a swollen jaw the second day, but they told me

that might happen...and he did notice one of the fillings; didn't do

anything bad to it, but did poke at it a bit here and there.

Fillings can make a tooth ache for a day or two if the cavity is

deep, so that is something to consider...she may be uncomfortable if

she starts messing with things...just call the dentist if that

happens and they'll help you out.

All in all, it is a challenging but not terrible experience...and it

is the ONLY way would ever be able to get dental care. I am

lucky that we have a really good pediatric dentist who trained at

Chapel Hill, NC...he knows these kids and knows what needs to happen

to make it work.

That may or may not make you feel better, but it is as

straightforward as I can be...doesn't make sense to stress too much

about it because she will be so much better off with good dental

care, and she will probably do very well. Even though there is no

way to keep a mom from worrying about putting a child under sedation,

the truth is, you will most likely have a relatively easy time at the

dentist, followed by a restful, relaxed day at home afterwards while

she works the rest of the anesthesia out of her system (read

that " calm kid " ).

Thanks so much for the honesty of it all...that really helps

me to know what to expect...all i got from the dentist, is " she'll

be fine " ...

so, they did this all at the dentist office? jenna has to

go to the hospital for this...they had told me, they do it

there, so that she won't have had a bad experience at the

dentist office (which, sorry, that already happened...)

and he really didn't explain much of anything..i think it

was because jenna was just sooo upset, we really couldn't

talk at all...I know she is gonna have 2 pulled..and then

some filled, but there may be more, cause he said, he really

didn't get a good look in her mouth.I think im more worried about

handling her after she wakes up...more than the surgery itself.

plus, then we have a 2 hour ride home...ugh...but hopefully

she will just sleep. I guess once this is over, hopefully

things will be better then...for the next time...at least

by then, i'll know more.

thanks so much once again....and i will look back in june

to find your posts!!!

nancy....who is just so glad she's not alone in all of this,

and has so many great ladies to help me get thru it all!!!!

Putter had extensive dental work when he was three and he is facing it

again. Too many sensory issues to be very happy brushing.

We cannot afford it right now so we are still putting it off.

It went as well as could be expected the first time. My biggest problem was

with Lou, not with Putter.

Hi. Don't know if this will help at all, but I think going to the

hospital is a really good idea. At my son's dentist's office, if the

procedure is small (cleaning or a small cavity), they don't use any

sedation. If its a little more complicated (a filling that requires

him to be " numbed " ), they give him mild sedation and if its a more

complicated procedure (pulling, etc), they send him to the hospital.

The last appointment he had he needed two fillings between his teeth

so the dentist suggested light sedation (apparently sometimes when

the numb the mouth this feeling is more stressful than anything

else). Well, they gave me a script and administered the medicine

when we got there. Unfortunately my son decided to fight the

medicine all the way and he was about 3/4 of the way through his

appointment before he fell asleep. So, I think going to the hospital

is a terrific idea - they can make sure your child is fully sedated

and they can monitor her too. Don't worry. I completely stressed

the first time we went to the dentist and it really didn't bother my

son at all. He's really good about going for cleanings, etc. We did

buy a book (Barney goes to the Dentist) and talked about it before

hand and practiced opening our mouth, etc. Hope all goes well

The nurse was an idiot!!

I also wanted to let you know has had 2 urinary procedures, tubes in

his ears, a group of moles removed on the side of his face/head and his

appendix out, all as outpatient procedures. had to have his tear

ducts opened, full brain and spinal MRI's and ear tubes put in, again,

outpatient. All of these were under anesthesia. Other than it making

sick to his stomach (he now gets a med for that afterwards), they

have had no ill affects at all. I hope this helps decrease your worries

some.

We did this with Boone. There was no other way to do it. There was no way I

was going to let a dentist give him something to knock him out and he needed

a lot of work in there. She'll be in much better hands with an

anesthesiologist and general anesthesia.

Take it from someone who has been through LOTS of surgeries with kids

(including a 12-hour spinal fusion for Amber) -- she'll be much better off.

Boone never even took pain meds after his dental procedure. He had four

teeth pulled and seven fillings. You'd have never known it later except that

he seemed to feel a whole lot better with the cavities gone. We also had to

go to Egleston 3.5 hours from home and he was happy as a clam all the way

home. I was prepared to stay overnight again if he was feeling bad, but he

did fine.

He had a huge jump in speech afterward.
