Hil, I would love to know too :o) Also, I didn't realize that kava

kava works that fast. St. 's takes about 6 weeks for full effect

right?

Trish,

Yes, the Kava Kava is just the herb (short-acting, not long-acting like St.

's Wort that has to build up in our blood to work). If you have a

health-food

store around your home, they should carry some tea bags and/or loose Kava

Kava that you can brew for a cup of tea.

WARNING: Drink it while it's hot or warm, otherwise Kava comes off tasting

like you're drinking pepper tea.........LOL! I found out the hard way, and

tastes

like you've just put pepper in the wrong tea.

Sam-e is very expensive. The cheapest I've seen it for is about $45 for 60

tabs (200 mcgm) at Costco. The recommended dose is 2 tablets/day. I only

take one and that seems fine. The first time I bought it I didn't want to

make that kind of investment, so I got it at Trader Joes, where it's $16.99

for 20 tablets.

Yes. I find Kava Kava to be VERY fast-acting too. I've never tried the

tea, but the capsules I take work very fast to calm anxiety. I find they

help me feel less anxious about my food too... and less motivated to

overeat it seems. This may be just my assumption though. I often eat over

anxious feelings, so it makes sense that they help me with this.

I didn't take St. 's Wort long enough to really see an effect. I'd be

curious to compare them though. I only tried the tincture version of St.

's Wort. It smelled and tasted so bad that I didn't do it much. Pills

would be better. I now only like tincture for acute herbal help

(anti-bacterial, anti-virals when I'm really ill).

Regarding Same, St.'s Wort and Kava, there is a big write up on the

three of these in March's Good Housekeeping. Some products that claim to be

SAMe don't even contain SAMe. There is a large chart in the article

outlining this! Unpleasant side effects that have been reported include

flatulence, headache, nausea, vomiting and diahrrhea. It can interact with

antidepressants (prescription) and other drugs.

St. 's Wort has actual scientific data backing it up that it can help

relieve mild depression in several studies. However it should not be taken

for more than three to fourmonths. If you need itlonger than that you should

consult your doctor. Side effects that are possible include: stomach upset

and increased sensitivity to the sun.

Kava has beenshown in one study to be as effective asa prescription

tranquilizer however it is not recommended by the medical community for

depression. Its effects are similar to that of alcohol. " Some kava users " ,

according to the article, " have reported gastronintestinal problems,

headache, and dizziness, and prolonged use may lead to an allergic skin

reaction. Experts recommend that kaven be taken for no more than three

months, as it can become habit forming. "

Something else to consider: herbs are NOT regulated by the FDA in this

country so a lot of the side effects and such are not known. The lack of

regulation leads to problems like varying amounts of herbs in the products

(like no SAMe in the SAMe you buy!). Because of this the same herb may

effect you in different ways depending on what bottle it came out of it.

Also, Reader's Digest for February states that herbs like the above can

interfere with anesthesia. So anyone undergoing surgery should avoid herbs

for two weeks before surgery! Speak to your doctor.

And if you are currently taking any of the three herbs mentioned above

please get the March Good Housekeeping Article and read it yourself!

And if you want a more intelligent read, look for articles in the magazines

at your local health food store. I would hesitate to trust articles about

herbs and Homeopathy in Good Housekeeping and Reader's Digest. The same

big drug companies and huge corporations that lobby to keep the FDA from

approving herbal remedies and Homeopathy are the ones who are bread and

butter to newsstand crapola like Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping.

There are two sides to every story about herbs and Homeopathy. Big drug

companies would rather have you treating your symptoms than making you well

and keeping you healthy with natural remedies.

Well... you know, I think I should at least try this :o)

Do you think most of the capsule brands are similarly effective?

I know that herbs aren't all regulated ... potency & quality can be

questionable I guess. Do you have an opinion of which brands you

like better? Thank you in advance!

Hillary,

Reader's Digest happens to publish stories from all those magazines that you

mentioned -- not to mention the magazines in those health food stores have

an agenda to sell herbs.

Good Housekeeping actually had positive things to say about the herbs so

before you start criticizing something you haven't read, read it.

I have read Good Housekeeping and Reader's Digest many times. I find their

articles are often uninformed, biased, directed toward those with very

limited education, and overly-influenced by thier advertisers. Everyone is

entitled to an opinion. Everything posted to this list is an opinion and

is often backed only by anecdotal evidence.

We disagree. I'm fine with that.
