Bob--

I don't think you're being overly negative at all. I agree with your

opinion. I couldn't figure out how that gal could eat cookies, candy and--of

all things, my favorite!--Twizzlers, when I can't even eat a bowl of Rice

Crispies without dumping--big time! I guess that the mom's eating was pretty

consistent with my own experience. Though I couldn't eat much, I did eat pot

roast the night before I was discharged from the hospital. So, the forkfull

of yogurt didn't impress me too much.

I meant to watch the show. But I put on 20/20 while I was looking for 48 HR.

All I remembered was that the show was about the morbidly obese. 20/20 had a

segment on a man weighing over 600 LB so I thought I had the correct program.

It showed how he has adjusted his life and accepted his weight. He is a

teacher (I want to say middle school/junior high school), and the effect he

has on his students and what they think of him. The kids told how he told

them " I may be fat, but fat does not make me stupid or lazy. " That was

probably the best line in the whole show. He also plays the piano for his

church choir, and relaxes by playing the sax.

He told how he does not go out to eat except to a few select places that

he frequents because they know him and he knows he won't break the chairs.

He told about how dependent he is upon his wife: to get things he needs

from other floors/rooms of their house and their church, etc.

He told about the humiliation of being so large: Going to see Austin

Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me. When Mr. Big (a seriously obese character)

first appeared in the movie, he and his son (weighing 400 lb. himself, in his

early 20s) felt they became the focus of the audience watching the movie. It

changed an evening out with his family to watch a comedy into making them the

side show.

There was some talk about the role of genetics. BUT NOT ONE WORD ABOUT WLS.

He was on-line after the show on 20/20's web page; but I forgot to go there

to see what was happening there.

You can check out the entire broadcast, in print of course, including a video

portion, on www.cbs.com. It even has pictures of the people introduced in

the segments. Sorry I missed 20/20--guess there really is competition. Wish

I had 2 TVs.

I agree, it was pretty good but did not cover enough. And I think the mother

daughter team was very good except that the mother was not represenitive as

far as eating constantly fairly quick after the surgery. Also the woman that

was 2 years out was portrayed as her house only had sweets and that's all

she ate. I feel it could have been more represenitive I hope I don't come

across as negative I don't intend to. One thing struck me was we are the

heaviest people in the world a title that I never sought :) :) :)

So--

How many of us dared watch the show last night? What are everyone's

opinions? I thought for the most part that the content was accurate enough,

though the way it was portrayed, the only wls procedure out there is the

Fobi

pouch version of the bypass, and that done only on the west coast. Well,

they do wls here in the east too! BTW, were any of you guys out there on

the

broadcast?

I wish that shrink would have talked to my shrink, who would like to see

more of her obese patients try WLS ! That was the part that really got me,

this air headed woman talking about how everyone who has weight loss surgery

ends up in a " prison " ! I think my diabetic lifestyle was the real prison,

and the surgery busted me out... she was just plain stupid.... Jan C>
