Guest guest
my nephew who is 3 has started lining things up compulsively! this has my sister very concerned and i am partly to blame. he is a very quirky child, incredibly intelligent and articulate for his age and i am always saying, in jest of course, how autistic he is ( i really don't think she has anything to be overly concerned about right now. he is a very functional child clever, no real behavioural problems, absolutely no socialization or communication problems - he's a bit oppostional and has some quirky " sameness " issues and sensory things - and now the lining up! michelle the mark of a genius? i have this big room in my house that used to be used as a playroom, but, because of its location in the house, has since gone unused. it has just been piling up with toys and various items i've started putting together but never finished. the other night, mike asked to see in the room, so i showed it to him and, despite the mess, he LOVED it. he thought it was the best room in the house and it should be " our " bedroom. he said he'd help me clean it up, but i decided to surprise him and do it myself, so that's what i've been doing since 7:00 this morning. anyway... trevor woke up around 7:30 and came in to " help " me. he played with the various toys as i was putting them away. finally i was done. all the toys and unfinished projects are stacked up fairly neatly in the corner. the rest of the floor is clear and vacuumed except for one spot...smack dab in the middle of the room sit 6 toy cars lined up perfectly side by side courtesy of my little boy. i don't think i need to tell any of you how completely amazing yet utterly frightening the sight of that is :-| " Something important to remember...we'll always be who we are. Guest guest
Boys like to line up cars. Now I know not all typical boys do but alot do. He know the color and everything about these cars. If someone tried to move one and switch it with another he know that they were switched. And is my only NT child. Sami is in gifted classes, has absolutely no obsessive traits, is way more social than her father or I have ever been, loves clothes, makeup(not that I let her wear it at 9), takes care of her dogs everyday sometimes without being reminded and is an all around good kid. They're younger brother, (7), goes in for testing this month. My first appointment with the neuropsychologist is next Monday. He had seizures from birth that were only partially controlled with medication. Since stopping the Depakote in May we've been seeing some severe behavior problems. He has some learning disabilities and I'll be surprised if he doensn't come back as Aspergers. So...yes, I did have an NT kid, but I also had another with some undx issues. I ran to get the video camera and was just amazed at his " project " ! Oh .... I don't know what to say. Isn't it possible to have autistic traits without autism? My husband and I have been discussing all our autistic traits from our childhood and wondering why we weren't autistic? (mostly my husband, who has *several* autistic traits) You're absolutely right, " completely amazing, yet utterly frightening " .... surreal. ~ Karin P.S. Guest guest
> So what advice do you give about having more children Tina? I don't expect anyone to say they wish they hadn't had their child. But... knowing what you know now.... > > As I type this out, I think it's almost an impossible question to answer.... > Having 2 out of the 3 with autism or other issues? My husband and I decided not to have any more. We had talked about having a 4th because a lot of parents I know say that it works better when you even out the number of children. Kids tend to play in pairs and with an odd number, there's always an odd kid out. This happens a lot with my kids. But epilepsy runs in my husband's family (something we didn't know when was born) and with being autistic and mentally handicapped, we didn't like our odds. Actually, we didn't like our odds after having one autie and one nt child, but fate stepped in and the birth control failed. I love my son more than life itself, but he wasn't planned. I don't expect anyone to say they wish they hadn't had their child. But... knowing what you know now.... > Oops, told you our choice but I really didn't answer the question. I'd have to say that this is a very personal choice. It's not a decision I think any of us make lightly. For me and my husband, the choice was not to risk it. Life is a gamble. We can guess, but we don't " Know " what's going to happen in the next 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure I'll still be typing at the computer, but I could be bandaging a bloody nose, a cut hand, stopping a fight, answering the phone...you get the picture. All we can do is weigh the odds and decide if we want to take the risk and see what type of child God gives us next. I like to be informed. If I were to consider having another child, I would definately seek genetic counseling. Tina
Guest guest
, I don't know if this will help at all, but here is what happened with us. Gabe does crap like this and it makes my blood run cold. He loves , lines up all the trains just so...He will hold them up all magneted together and spin them and then flap his hands he is so excited. He also bites and hits himself. These are not things Mikey does, or at least not in the same way/situations. I realize there is a lot of copying going on but some of these things Gabe is doing on his own. I have some concerns about his speech & hearing too. I have really not been likeing the path all these things seem to head down. We went ahead & did an OT/PT eval, and he is scheduled for a speech eval and a full developmental eval in Dec. His OT/PT eval were normal! Hurrah! They said it is OK for him to be doing things like that so long as they are not interfering with his development. Sooooo...if you're worried, check it out, but don't panic. If there is something you will be catching it as early as possible and that gives him the best chance. If there's not something you'll set your mind at ease. Good luck hon. -Sara. who will be going to the dr tomorrow, yes, thank you.

Guest guest
> his social worker is quite positive he'll qualify no problem < i suppose i should mention that to qualify for special ed preschool in nys, you need to have a 33% delay in one area or a 25% delay in two areas. trevor currently has a 33% delay in two areas... I used to think that was so cool and neat that Mark could do that.
