Guest guest
PA has an APCO requirement...California has a POST (Peace Officer Standardized Training, yes...even for dispatchers) requirement, however, it was incorporated into LAPD's training, NOT a separate course. Several states' community colleges offer some classes, too. Dan
Guest guest
> My only formal training was sitting three weeks with another dispatcher....but > that was 1975. I had 5 days OJT in 1973. I guess the job had gotten more complex by 1975 <grin>. When I was first hired we could go 24+ hrs without a call for service. Guest guest
I've been doing Police Dispatching for 8 yrs and prior to that I dispatched for 6 tow companies (all at the same center) for 15 yrs. we were contracted by the city to tow all the Police equip and the city impounds. That led me into Police Dispatching...no formal classes other than what we can take to keep ourselves " certified " for the State of California. How funny it is that we have to have to be certified to do our jobs! We have to take classes that are supposed to help us do our jobs, get certification and keep them " up to date " every 2 yrs....Only in California tho....I'm understanding that other states don't have to have it? Can anyone advise?? Be interesting to see which states don't vs does.....
Guest guest
> had 5 days OJT in 1973. That's when I started, and I had exactly the same 5 days. Actually, they were midnights, and the guy training me wouldn't let me talk on the radio or answer the phone... (some training)... I just sat and watched. I'd actually loafed around the PD some before that so I wasn't totally lost, knew all the officers, knew the town, knew the people... But I'll never forget.... the next Monday at 4pm, I walked into City Hall, back to the Dispatch desk... radio, typewriter, ten-code card etc... Everyone else in the building got up and walked out. I was a Dispatcher. Weintraut
