Wish I lived close enough for that...

It's about a 10 mile 1-way commute for me.

I'd really love to be close enough to walk to work.

We have several dispatchers that live close enough to walk or bike to work.

Only one does.

And that's because she doesn't own a car. She hoofs it or takes a bus

everywhere.

Re: 911:: stress relievers

I commute back and forth to work on my bicycle. It's not far, about 2.5

miles each way, it's a great way to blow off steam after leaving work. Also

a good way to wake you up and clean off your mental slate before clocking

in. (I currently work 7a-3p, about to go back to 6a-2pm)

The key there is to shower before you go, keep deodorant handy in your locker.

We do have a shower in our locker room so I have the option of using that.

Generally the ride to work for me is mostly downhill so I barely break a sweat.

Also, since we wear a full uniform (riding in a police uniform would make me a

tempting target!), I ride in wearing comfortable bike shorts (the baggy, non

spandex type) and T-shirt and keep my fresh uniforms in the locker.

This was so funny...reminded me of what our HR Director once said to me, when

she stated that if our job was so stressful, why weren't we paid more?

Just recently, the same woman told me when I joked about applying for an open

post in her department that I " don't need all the stress in the job! We have to

deal with so many strange people and maintain our calm manner. " When asked to

describe one of her most " stressful " situations...she talked about when one

little old man brought in a dead bird in a paper sack and sat it on the desk

demanding that it be tested for West Nile! We of course asked how they handled

it...they got the phone number for the environmental department of the county,

measured the bird and then had to tell the little old man that it was too small

to test! Now, guys...how's that for stress?!?!?!?!?!?!

As to what I do to reliever stress......nothing that works too well it seems. I

sometimes crochet, I take long hot bubbly baths and watch political shows! And,

I take my " happy pill " every day.
