And now A & E will >have something on the 16th. What is June now? National Alcoholism Month. *** According to Ken's original post the 20/20 program is on Wednesday the 7th. [Wouldn't want anybody to set their VCR for the wrong date and then go off on vacation or something.] The 20/20 program looks promising -- there's Peele, and 2 of the 3 other subjects also appear to be something other than mind-controlled AA agents. Haven't heard about National Alcoholism Month :-) Maybe it's just that some people in the news business have finally realized that there is a story out here -- that there are a bunch of us who can't or won't go to AA, and we're doing fine without it. Sometimes a previously taboo subject breaks out into the open for no real reason except that the number of dissenters have reached a certain critical mass -- and then the media go into a kind of frenzy, all trying to scoop each other. I've said this before, but it bears repeating -- that 20 years ago there was absolute zip in print. Nobody like nne Gillum, much less Ken Ragge or Stanton Peele. There were a couple of minor leaguers with claims that you could cure your alcoholism by taking the right vitamins, but NO critics of AA that I ever heard of between Cain's forgotten 1964 book and Stanton Peele's 'Diseasing.' The internet is definitely a factor -- now anybody looking for books about AA can go to Amazon and stumble onto The Real AA, Cult or Cure, Diseasing and so on. So it was only a matter of time before the broadcast media pulled the boogeyman came out of the closet. > >Overseas list members - if you aren't able to see these shows, maybe some of >us Yanks can tape them for you. Guest guest
Hi Janice: Glad you were interviewd. I get tired of seeing the biased interviews all the time. I've got the capability to put each ep. on 1 cd. For our overseas friends, I'm aware of, (please note the qualifier) let me know if your interested via PRIVATE email. Janice would you remind the list so I don't forget to record it? I've already set up a follow up to your email but it never hurts to be safe about it. A & E Program AA's coming out all over the tube. Just saw this on the Delphi forum by nne Gillum who wrote How AA Failed Me. " Also, A & E cable channel interviewed me for a show they are doing entitled Inside AA. It will present a very balanced perspective of the pros and cons of AA. It has a tentative air date of June 16. " So 20/20 (or is it 48 hours) will do something on the 3rd? And now A & E will have something on the 16th. What is June now? National Alcoholism Month. Overseas list members - if you aren't able to see these shows, maybe some of us Yanks can tape them for you. I don't have a video copier or I'd make copies. Maybe there's another way around this. jan --------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Old school buds here: http://click./1/4057/2/_/4324/_/959404134/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ---

Guest guest
Did you catch that quick editing to take Peele's comments about AA's non-profit status to present him as an AA supporter? I swear I felt the breeze from the scissors! BTW, has anyone ever heard anyone of importance cite an A & E Investigation as authority on anything? I don't think anyone who desires to be taken seriously would use this network as proof of anything. A & E Program apparently used Gilliam and Peele (especially Peele!) to make points that Gilliam and Peele wouldn't have agreed with.

Guest guest
Word up Bob & Kayleigh. Also bugged me how they made Gilliam seem so wishwashy - " well, AA does work for a lot of people, it just didn't work for me " . Maybe I'm biased because reading her book was the first glimmer of light at the end of the 12-step tunnel for me. I wonder if she was pissed when she saw the program. I can't help feeling freaked out at the fact that it's so easy to make something that should be controversial into Stuart Smalley. They made AA seem like the saviour of the bloody world! I mean, what was with the Hallmark moment at the end on the beach at sunset? Oops I'm going off on a tear again. Sorry. Please remember I'm newly escaped from the 12-step nuthatch. Guest guest
Regardless of whether A & E is an authority on anything, I wonder where they got this clip. I don't believe they could have interviewed Stanton themselves, because I believe he would have insisted on approval before airing. So I am now wondering, what other affiliated channels could have filmed this and let A & E use it? Seems to me Stanton will want to comment, though he hasn't (apparently) yet. --- Kayleigh Zz zZ |\ z _,,,---,,_ /,`.-'`' _ ;-;;,_ |,4- ) )-,_..;\ ( `'-' '---''(_/--' `-'\_) >Did you catch that quick editing to take Peele's comments about AA's >non-profit status to present him as an AA supporter? Guest guest
And where were the cigarettes? Somebody with a better memory than mine can correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that the AA of AE contains zero percent cigarette smokers! Whereas, in the AA of 2020 they were always zooming in on smoldering ciggys held in grubby, slightly shaky hands. My girlfriend (still in AA) and I watched the 2020 show together, and this is one of the things she picked up on as an element of negativity in the 2020 portrayal of AA. --wally Re: A & E Program >And the dude from the NIH?? Guest guest
I got up this morning and started reading all the posts on the A & E program. Glad I didn't watch it! The 20/20 was on so late I could hardly stay awake through it, so I taped this one. I'll just tape over it I guess. I'm so glad I found this list too. Just in time to save my life. If I hadn't found this list, I might have thought I was the only one who wasn't running another alcohol program who thought AA was harmful (and might have followed Dennis to the life after). If only I could have gotten him to read this site. In 25 years, I was the only person he had ever heard criticize AA who was not " an alcoholic in denial " . He thought that he and I were the only people in the world who thought it was depressing bullshit. (He couldn't understand why I thought so, and he had been told by AA the he was " defective " . etc.) I have been thinking about going to AA meetings in my spare time and telling people about the court decisions which state they can't be forced to attend, publicizing the books which criticize, AA, etc. Does anybody have an idea what could happen to me? Bob Warner wrote me that he didn't even think it was a good idea that I put my phone number in one of my posts a while back. I don't have a regular job, so no one can fire me. I have many diverse clients, so losing a few won't hurt me either. So tell me what could happen? Will I be physically attacked? Will they kill me? Poison my coffee, maybe? Cause me to go out and get drunk--highly unlikely. Maybe they'll get an injunction against me going to meetings? Maybe that'll get some front page publicity, which is just what this issue needs. I'm starting to feel a little better since Dennis died, and now I am ready to do something significant to insure that he did not live and die for nothing. If just one person gets out before they ruin their life it's worth it. Any ideas? Charlene - Re: A & E Program >And the dude from the NIH?? Please he looks embalmed himself. I can't. My fiance wanted to do that, too, after we left, but I said the same thing to him that I suggest to you - it's kind of kind going into the lions' den armed with a feather. If you really want to see how psycho these people can become, go on ahead in there and challenge their comfy, cushy, false serenity. The lions will attack, I can almost guarantee it, unless the AA is different where you are. If you really want to sell something, you'd better be talking to people who want to buy it. Otherwise you're wasting your time, and it could be dangerous to boot. (opposite of " love bombing " ?) These folks can be pretty persistent when they get a bug up their bum. I've watched them literally let people die because in their opinion, they were " beyond help " or " too far gone " - simply because they didn't swallow the bitter pill that is AA dogma. They were never offered an alternative because alternatives weren't available. I would instead suggest perhaps starting an alternative to AA meeting (MM, SMART, RR, whatever), and talk (privately) to some of the people you know from AA who might be on the fence. You may be surprised at how many turn up. Much safer, and more constructive, it seems to me. I admire your courage. Best of luck.
