And they need certain type of TV or monitor too, not just any old TV. You can always pay to get an NTSC video copied over onto whatever format it is we use over here, but it costs a bit. Joe B. Guest guest
Kaylleigh, that cat is the coolest ASCII art I have ever seen!!! and I am chatting a lot. I didn't see that AA infomercial thing but I think that's just as well...one less irritating thing to ruminate over. I don't expect anyone to say anything but great things about AA in public. I rememebr when I first started going, I reassured my cult worries by remembering that Dear Abby had been singing its praises for years. So it can't be bad, right?? I also belong to an AA email group and I am getting ignored by people there. Someone quoted Bill W. talking about how alcoholics by their very nature are drawn to controversy. Who said controversy is a negative thing? A blanket condemnation of controversy is kind of fascist isn't it? Or am I just reading a meaning that isn't there? I knew I would put off the people on the AA list by saying that what I just said, but that is truly what I was thinking. " to thine own self be true " ...why does everyone ignore my post? yet when i talk about how i didn't have a good day, I get several replies full of advice. Then maybe I could just drop it and not argue with these people...but I could only do that if I had no emotions whatsoever. After all this thing has been my life for 5 years. I have to have these conversations. Bye for now :-) __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I really want to communicate my outrage to the A & E people -- does anyone know how to do this? Guest guest
On occasions in meetings I have been able to maintain an attitude describable as " negative non-connection " with the whole proceedings. This is probably taken as " not impolite off-handedness " or something in that vein. The AAs reaction has been a sort of puzzled stepping back from the problem and on one occasion it was suggested to me directly and quietly that I should not come to the meeting. Guest guest
The reason I have been thinking about doing this is that here AA get most of their recruits from COURT ORDERED programs. In other words at any given meeting, 25% of the attendees are likely to be sitting there hating it but ordered by the court to go--never knowing that there is a Federal Case in our district that says THE COURT MUST OFFER ALTERNATIVES. Literally every court here (there are five in Orange County) order the defendants in open court to " Go to 3 AA meetings per week. " I have objected to this in court, and been told by the judge, if any defendant objects, they can ask and will be informed of alternatives. " I say that's BULLSHIT! About 75% of the defendants are in pro per or represented by the PD (who isn't going to rock the boat--her check gets signed by the same one who signs the judge's check). I guarantee you, there is very rarely the defendant who is going to get up in court and say, " Excuse me, your Honor, but I objectg to going to AA. " Warner is one in 10 million! The DA plea forms, probation department forms are PREPRINTED with the Order to Attend Alcoholics Anonymous. The court self help group forms are preprinted AA Sheet and are addressed to " Secretary, Alcoholics Anonymous. These court ordered defendants are the people I hope to reach. There is no hope for anyone who is attending these things (XA)VOLUNTARILY! I just don't want to get the shit beaten out of me, or end up dead! LOL. One of the reasons I work for myself is to have a choice of the people I work with, life being short and not worth it to be around people who are negative, idiotic, annoying etc. I am already moderator of a WFS group here. Hope I can get someone else to take it over soon. I want to start a group in the jails where the people who need help the most are! I pay to duplicate material with all the extra money I have, I collect paperbacks to take into the jails. I did this even before I met Dennis, it is just a coincidence that I met him. If each one of us approached this like multi=level marketing or a pyramid scheme, we could take over the world. That's how AA did it. Guest guest
Sometimes late when things are real and people share the gift of gab between themselves some are quick to take the bait and catch the perfect prize that waits among the shelves but OZ never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't already have and cause never was the reason for the evening for the Tropic of Sir Galahad. So Please believe in me when I say I'm spinning round round round round round..... After reading this Pete I've got to admit I can't get that song out of my head. It doesn't help that I just heard it but some of it applies just now I think. But really it doesn't matter what I think. It's all about you right now bud. I'd just ask you to remember one thing. OZ never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't already have. Guest guest
Nic I am not able to say with no reservations that there is nothing of any worth in AA. I see AA as a repeat of my high school experience, which was certainly very traumatizing. In someways, I feel that I am repeating what happened in high scool all over again. Guest guest
Did you consider your high school experience good for you? How can being traumatized be good for anyone? I agree that you can be traumatized but yet learn French, chemistry, whatever -- but as you see, the traumatization does not assist you -- you learn in spite of it, and some are hindered from learning by it. I think most of us agree that there are much easier ways to get sober, and some of us agree that not only does AA fail to get us sober, it is instrumental in getting us to drink (damagingly) again. (When I say " sober, " I refer to the dictionary definition, not AA's.) I don't think it's much of a stretch to say there's something good in just about anything you name. But how much good compared to how much garbage? How much of the potentially good is being distorted? How much does the bad outweigh the good, to the point where what little good can be gleaned comes at a great psychic cost? --- Kayleigh Zz zZ |\ z _,,,---,,_ /,`.-'`' _ ;-;;,_ |,4- ) )-,_..;\ ( `'-' '---''(_/--' `-'\_) >Nic >I am not able to say with no reservations that there >is nothing of any worth in AA. Guest guest
I once lost 30 lbs. in 3 months as a direct result of going to AA meetings! The " catch " being that I didn't have a driver's license at the time, and probably averaged 10 miles a day getting to meetings on foot ;-) Had no idea I was losing weight until I started noticing that my pants were constantly threatening to fall off. I have always thought that characterizing someone with a weight problem as an " over-eater " instead of an " under-exerciser " amounts to a value judgement about what constitutes a normal lifestyle. Most of human evolutionary history definitely was not directed toward producing a creature that spends most of its time sitting at a desk or on a couch watching a display produced by a CRT. Too little physical activity, rather than too much food, is the unnatural aspect of 'civilized' life, and probably the real culprit in most instances of 'overweight.' But it's all kind of irrelevant anyhow. When 12sfers start muttering about going back to XA, it's ALWAYS because they are feeling lonely or isolated, rather than because they imagine they might find a solution for an addiction problem in meetings. --wally -----Original Message----- >Me too - a friend of mine lost 115 lbs. in WW & they don't make you >pray or anything! >Nic > > [snip] >> > >> >Must also say folks you really are putting me in quandary abt >whether >> >I should associate with OA or not. ly Im not doing too well >> >right now - I'm in the shit financially, very depressed, fat as a >> >tank >> >and the only bright spot is I have a possibility of a some work >> >coming >> >my way, but I havent had a job interview, let a lone a job, for >> >years >> >and I'm very scared abt nmy future. Guest guest
Learning French, Doug, is a piece of cake, and especially for you since you just live across the Channel. However, reading " Cyrano de Bergerac " in French class is far less rewarding than reading Colette. --- Kayleigh Zz zZ |\ z _,,,---,,_ /,`.-'`' _ ;-;;,_ |,4- ) )-,_..;\ ( `'-' '---''(_/--' `-'\_) >Kayleigh, > >Learning French would appear to involve some measure of traumatisation, but >it's more worthwhile than sticking around *A, >yrs > >The Dook of Wellington (kiddin'). --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Before you buy.
