you think everyone is on spectrum so I guess Marti is in good

company (Oprah comes to mind...) I think Marti is just plugging away

the same as the rest of us. Doctors can in fact be helpful if only as

back up.

Hi Eileen,

First I got a small patch of dry scaly skin on my scalp. No one

thought too much about it and my pediatrician gave me this bad

smelling ointment in a little jar that did not clear it up. Then, I

got Red dry skin on my eyelids and everyone told me I should wash my

face more. My pediatrician sent me to Iowa City (about 1oo miles

away) to see a dermatologist who hemmed and hawed and looked at my

firngernails(no pitting ) and called in a bunch of students to see

the difference between Seborrheic Dermatitis and psoriasis. I was

diagnosed with the former and given a tube of mercury(They actually

used that back then). Later one big toe swelled a little and

really.really hurt bad.I couldn't put any weight on it and I was

laughing about it with my friends because we didn't know any better.

Everyone kept telling me I must have stubbed my toe. I got in an

argument with my brother and told him I think I would remember if I

stubbed it. My mother called the pediatrician quite perplexed and

said I appeared to be in pain but no one could fiqure out why. He

said He was afraid he knew why but would like a specialist to confirm

his suspisions. Back to Iowa City where I saw a rheumatologist this

time. The Rheumatolgist diagnosed Pa and pointed out small changes in

my feet that didn't even hurt yet. He said he was sorry but it looked

like I my might have a severe case. I think he felt worse than I did

because I didn't have an inkling about how it would change my life.

Rheumatolgy sent me over to Dermatology where they changed my

diagnosis to Psoriasis, still fretting because there was no nail

involvement(Yet)

And yes,in my case, unfortunately the skin got much much worse and

there was no longer even a question about what it was.

My current Dermie told me about a lady who had only a small patch of

psoriasis on her scalp but had such severe Pa that she sometimes used

a wheelchair. She was put on Enbrel and it was like a miracle for

her joints but that small patch of psoriasis that alerted the Docs to

her problem is still there. This can be a puzzling disease

and " present " itself differently in different people.

Sorry my answer got so long. I hope my story can help other people.

Best Wishes,

Marti

I have been misdiagnosed for years and finally I was diagnosed after they

realized I was having nail involvement as well. It's a shame they can't

diagnose PA sooner before it really is full blown.

Hi ,

I think I was unusual in that Rheum helped me more at the beginning.

I have a very good dermie now. I really miss that Rheumatologist

from years ago. He was one in a million but they didn't even use Mtx

back then so there was a limited amount he could do for me.

These are better times for us!
