The Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic (ASAC),

located in Coral Gables, Florida, provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to children and adults to investigate the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purposes of the evaluation are to determine current level of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists, doctoral level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting clinicians from CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that individuals diagnosed with autism and their families are connected to CARD services and supports. State-of-the-art assessment measures, such as the

ADOS and ADI-R are used in ASAC evaluations.

The Curriculum

· Highly individualized, hands on curriculum that is designed to address the specific needs of each participant.

· Class sizes are small with a low student-teacher ratio.

· Focuses on the development of daily living and job readiness skills needed to live as independently as possible.

· Skills are taught both at the camp site and community setting.

· Participants develop their self-esteem and sense of achievement as they master each new skill.

Career Exploration and Job Development

· Participants identify their career interests and abilities, learn how to complete job applications, develop a resume and learn interviewing techniques.

· Participants are taught a variety of job readiness skills, including retail, clerical, food services and computer tasks.

· Participants will receive on-the-job training in a business within the community.

Other Services

· Life Skills – to include money management, meal planning, food preparation, personal and community success.

· Driver’s Education – assistance in the required online Drug & Alcohol Awareness class. Review of Florida driving rules and regulations to prepare for permit exam (to be taken online during the course). *Additional fees for online courses.

· Recreational Skills – practice socialization skills while engaging in a variety of activities.

· Community Integration – participate in weekly Friday field trips.

partnering with Lime to offer scholarships to students with disabilities who are pursuing university degrees in the field of computer science in Canada or the U.S. Lime is a not-for-profit organization that brings together global corporations and people with disabilities, bringing to light an untapped source of talent. Scholarships will be granted for the 2009–2010 academic year, and recipients will be invited to attend an all-expenses-paid retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View in 2010.They hope that this program will increase opportunities for students with disabilities and encourage them to pursue careers in

computer science. They also hope to foster long-lasting relationships through which these

Support NSU's Mailman Segal Institute's Programs forChildren with Autism by Shopping at & Noble May 8th - May 10th

Free: Hear well known speakers talk about current early childhood development issues

Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- The Mailman Segal Institute (MSI) for Early Childhood Studies at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is partnering with & Noble for an exciting bookfair with speakers to help raise much needed funds for the institute's programs for children with autism, including the Baudhuin Preschool and Starting Right.

The Baudhuin Preschool, a model program for children 3-5 years of age with autism spectrum disorders, is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and is operated in collaboration with Broward County Public Schools. Starting Right is a parent/child early intervention program for children ages 18-36 months who have been diagnosed with autism or who are exhibiting delays in language or social skills.

From May 8th – May 10th, a percentage of the total net sales from the purchases of books, magazines, audio books, videos, DVDs, CDs and any cafe item will be donated to MSI's programs for children with autism. A representative from Children's Medical Services will also be available to answer questions on Saturday, May 9, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. The Children's Medical Services (CMS) program provides a family-centered and coordinated system of care for children with special health care needs.

Baudhuin Preschool teachers were asked to put together book "wish lists" for their classrooms. These books will be on display in the children's section and available for purchase. Also, don't forget, Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th! This is the perfect time to pick up a Mother's Day gift or purchase summer reading material for yourself and your children!

The mission of SFACS is to provide education and services to individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) residing in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We will target students on the lower functioning end of the spectrum, who may have deficits in communication and self-help skills, as well as behavioral challenges, and our students will be on a modified curriculum. The methodologies of Applied Behavioral Analysis will be applied in conjunction with the Miami-Dade County Public School and State of Florida standards in order to provide the most effective individualized educational programs possible.
