Guest guest
Go back to the school and get your “tour”. But keep in mind you may be viewing what they want you to see. Even better get the teacher’s schedule and determine which part you want to “tour”. Correct me if I’m wrong but depending where you live will determine which complex program you go to. Guest guest
, We toured numerous schools before we went to our local public school. You might of had a bad experience and for that I am sorry. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean that all schools are like that because I know that my son is getting the best at the school we chose for him. I did tour his school, his classroom and I volunteered 3 times a week, in another classroom, for the whole school year. I, and the other parents, always have an open invitation to peek in and/or visit the class. Your talking about an elementary school that my son doesnt attend so there fore I can not comment on, but I can comment on the great school my son is at. Guest guest
Oh yeah, I'm going back! More than anything, I want to see the kids that would be in class with my son. The ESE specialist told me that teachers have not been reassigned yet, so there's no sure way of knowing who's going to be teaching in the Fall, but none of the kids are leaving. Everglades is our homeschool for Complex PLACE but we still have the option of keeping him at Baudhuin, which at this point, seems to be the best option. > > Go back to the school and get your " tour " . Guest guest
Hi, My son does not go to Everglades but I toured it this week and I have sat on various IEP meetings with parents. I can tell you that the ESE specialist, Ms. Dombovary, is very knowledgeable and I have also had good interactions with the autism coach. At the meetings the experience has been positive in that they have really listened to the parents concerns and suggestions. The typical children are so used to the high number of children with autism in the school and they make a genuine effort to integrate them so our children are seen as just other students and not just " those ESE kids " as in some other schools. Please keep in mind that even when all the kids in the cluster maybe staying at Everglades next year, some 5 year old students will be moving up to supported K and general Ed K because they are doing so well. They have various cluster classroom, one is with very verbal high functioning kids, and I also saw another one that was with the non-verbal and low verbal lower functioning kids. Most of those will stay in the same setting next year. Whether your child will be with the same kids you saw will depend on what his or her level of functioning is. If it helps, in my opinion, I saw the students in the cluster motivated, engaged and happy. My son went to Baudhuin for a year and a half but my many requests and efforts to have him integrated with the VPK class were not granted even though he is now sucessfully attending an integrated Pre-K at another school. At Everglades your child will have a chance to be integrated at least part of the day, even when in the Pre-K cluster and will give him a chance to adjust before he starts Kindergarten there. The Autism Coach and ESE specialist will know him and be more prepared to tend to his needs from day one. Good luck whatever you decide! > > > > Go back to the school and get your " tour " . Guest guest
, all I was trying to say that if your “tour†was interrupted you should go back and get your tour. If you are completely satisfied where your son is going that is excellent!  I just feel the “spectrum†is not adequately addressed. It’s an example of one shoe fits all concept. Some children on the spectrum do very well in school and of course some don’t . I worry about the “don’t’s. Guest guest
I think the odds are in your favor the same teacher will be returning. Time is running out. You may be touring an empty classroom. Guest guest
, I wasn't doubting what you said at all. I just wanted to state my expierence. The one thing that we can all agree on is that one child on the spectrum is not the same as another child on the spectrum. At my son's school, his IEP and the STAR program are a perfect fit.. I have never just settled for anything in my life, and I refuse to settle for my son. In my short expierence being a mother (Tyler is my only child) my refusal to "settle" is a million times greater that when I was not a mother. My husband and I, as I have stated earlier, toured many schools. The autistic coach and the whole ESE team at my son's school fits him. As anyone of us that post, we all worry about a lot of things including the dont's. In my sons class there are 7 kids in his class. Are they similar to Tyler? Maybe in certain areas...but I do not know his classmates well. Are they on different parts of the spectrum? Yes. I try to look at the positive things though, and we as parents try to make the most educated decisions we can. As stated before, we learn from our mistakes and build on the things that work. I wish it was easier for all of us. Guest guest
We can only share our own experience. Mine is from the stand point of the parent of an ASD kid high functioning enough to be fully included in a supported class (i.e. the general E.D. teacher with a T. Asst assigned to the class.) with pull-outs for speech and V.E. In all, I have no complaints yet about my son's stay at Everglades (he's now in 3rd grade.) Mrs. Dumbovary has always seemed very knowledgeable, pleasant and approachable. I admit however to be very anxious every new school year about the general E.D. teacher he will get. From what I understand, general ED teachers in supported classes don't necessarily need to have strong experience in dealing with kids with specific exceptionalities. So it's always a gamble. He's had some very knowledgeable teachers and others who were completely new to autism (so a bit of trial and errors with some stressful moments there.) I don't know if the Everglades experience is different depending on the inclusion level of the child (i.e. general class Vs cluster.)But I feel I should give credit where it's due. There is always room for improvements. But so far, the Everglades staff seems to be on top of things with my son. I just hope to be able to sing that same tune next year after those massive budget cuts take effect. M. www.paperfollies.com
