Guest guest
My understanding is that early AA's were anxious to guard confidentiality, and a member " sponsored " i.e. nominated, a newbie's wish to join. in the 30s hospital beds may have been rare but they were in fact cheap (by modern standards) - typically they cost little more than a room in a hotel. It was SOP for the pigeon to be hospitalized *even if medically unnecessary* and for them to be kept isolated, with no visitors allowed except AA members and no reading material allowed except for two Bibles - the old one and 's divinely inspired new one.
