List of Known Damage Caused by Hurricane Charley

Published: Aug 14, 2004

Here's a county-by-county list of damage as reported by officials and

on-the-scene reporters. CHARLOTTE (Punta Gorda): - >>>snip<<<

My dad and step mom are among the missing. They live in Punta Gorda in one

of the demolished trailer parks. The last I heard from them was thursday

afternoon. They said they were going to a friends house if it got bad but he

thought the hurricane was going to miss them. My dad is on oxygen and they

aren't in the best of health. I have been in contact with the Red Cross and

they will contact me as soon as they find anything out. Until then, its a

waiting game. It surely doesn't look good when you look at the pictures on

the news.

I'm happy to report a friend of mine who is a Fire Chief in Pinellas County

made the 100 mile trip south early this morning and located my dad and step

mom. He said they were hot, hungry and dazed and my dad was out of oxygen,

but said they were ok. My friend {Jeff} and his wife set them up with a

motel in Sarasota for the week until we figure out what to do next. They

lost everything. Thanks for everyones thoughts and prayers, they worked !

First, let me thank NC911 for sharing the pictures you did.

I hope everyone keeps in mind that there are 5 other Counties that

suffered damage other than Charlotte. Osceola & Polk County near the

Orlando area were also hit hard.

Here is another list of items that folks are in desperate need of.

Soap, Shampoo, Toothpaste & brushes, mouthwash, Work Gloves, First

aid items, Ready to feed formula, Sunscreen and Insect repellent.

Those last two are important since so many wonderful volunteers are

here from out of state, they're having a rude awakening to the

Florida Sun, especially the National Guard people.

I was asked if there is anything set up to donate supplies to our

fellow dispatchers. I asked that question to a friend of mine at the

Sarasota Sheriff Office who is going to let me know. As soon as I

find out I will let you know.

I also found out that Dispatchers from Tampa & Sarasota are working

in DeSoto County. Dispatchers from Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Sarasota

& Clay are in Charlotte County. Charlotte County may have to leave

their building due to it being unsafe to be in. Dispatchers may be

relocated to a Command Bus in the next few day's.

I apologize for sounding like a broken record but for those of us

that live and work here in Fla, this has really affected all of us.

This is the largest relief effort since Sept 11th. Our local news

shows Fire & Law Enfocement people that have either lost their homes

or have damage that are out working rather than taking care of their

own needs first.

Again, appreciate everyone's time. Please work with your local

agencies and see what you can do do help our fellow dispatchers.

I already took a call from someone looking for a job having to

relocate from Charlotte County.
