Guest guest
This is so true. There have been times when I could not verify information when requested by the Chief etc, because the information was given via Nextel and not over the radio. For a while, it was a major issue. It does not seem to have been such an issue of late...but that is always subject to change! > It's far too easy for very important information to be lost simply because the Dispatcher or Officer " didn't want to say it over the air " , dialed a cell.. and nothing is recorded anywhere< Again, I agree wholeheartedly. My dispatchers hate the Nextel that is in dispatch. On duty, off duty, officers tend to push to talk all the time! Of course, they only have the PTT feature on the Nextels unless they wish to personally pay for the cell service. So, they just PTT us now to do the same things. And, they have no clue that sometimes, when we don't pick up on that little jewel immediately, it could be because we have about 5 different " fires " going on at the same time! Now, it is sometimes a boon to have the Nextels....but, if an officer can't reach another officer by Nextel (usually because said officer is on the Nextel with SOMEONE else) then, they PTT dispatch to see if we can contact him! Well, duh, we do have the EXACT same Nextel that you have! > When I worked every road officer was given a cell phone. It was thought that this would take some of the load off of Dispatch. Officers would make many of their own calls instead of having Dispatch do it. (Which again, keeps things from being recorded) It ended up doing just the opposite. The phone was always ringing, officers wanting others phone numbers... officers calling dispatch saying " call so and so... have them do such and such " ... With a cell phone in their hand... weird stuff<

I could stand the hot calls, long hours, nutty public but this kind of stuff just drove me crazy. Weintraut
Guest guest
The general rule around the office is that cell phones are for personal use only. Pretty much cut & dry. -- W. Blevins wblevins@...
