Dear All:

The email below contains a lot of information about pending bills in the Legislature this session regarding vaccine safety, vaccine timing, informed consent before a child is vaccinated, and allowing parents to exempt their child from receiving vaccinations on the basis of a philosophical objection. We at FND are very much in favor of safe vaccines - safe being the operative word. There is a great debate raging in the medical community over the issues that are specifically addressed by these bills. The debate goes way beyond whether or not to include thimerasol (mercury) in vaccines. It includes the appropriate number of vaccines to be given to infants and children and the appropriate timing of those vaccines. Again, we believe in safety and we also believe that a parent is the best decision maker for the health and well being of their own child when they are given access to information. I urge all of you to take the time to read the bills - they're not that long - and, if these issues are important to you and your family, to contact your representatives in the State House and Senate and let them know how you feel.

This ACTION ALERT is more targeted. The House is not inclined to hear any more Bills this session in committees. THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR THE CHILDHOOD VACCINATION-VACCINE SAFETY BILLS.

THIS MONDAY, MARCH 30, WE NEED TO LIGHT UP SPEAKER CRETUL’S PHONE LINES TO LET HIM KNOW 3 SIMPLE FACTS:

· THESE BILLS ARE NOT ANTI-VACCINE LEGISLATION! Supporters are not anti-vaccine! We support these Bills to help create a safer vaccination policy for Florida’s children and to help restore public trust in the national vaccine program!!!

**The first thing that was said to me was, “oh yeah, you’re talking about those anti-vaccine bills.” Unfortunately, this is a common misconception but it can be easily overcome through the above explanation.

· EXPRESS THAT YOU WANT THE COMMITTEEE MEETINGS TO CONTINUE AND FOR THE FOLLOWING BILLS TO BE KEPT “ALIVE” AND PLACED ON THE SCHEDULE!! THEY ARE: HB 39 (MERCURY REMOVAL) HB 1455 (ALTERNATIVE VACCINE SCHEDULE), HB 1457 (PHILISOPHICAL EXEMPTION) AND HB 33 (INFORMED CONSENT). *For additional information about the Bills, go to: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/bills.aspx

· EXPRESS YOUR VIEW THAT COSTS OF LEGISLATION ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU, BUT SO IS THE COSTS OF NOT DOING THE RIGHT THING. THE STAFF ANALYSIS OF INCREASED COSTS COULD BE SAID ABOUT ANY CHANGE TO POLICY AND NOT JUST THIS INITIATIVE. THE REAL COST TO THIS LEGISLATION WOULD BE IN FAILING TO ACT AND ACCEPTING THE COSTS OF CHILDREN'S LIVES BEING FOREVER AFFECTED.

) I spoke with “JED” in Speaker Cretul’s office Friday. He was very receptive and supportive and encouraged more calls and support of this legislation.

The process is bureaucratic and can be frustrating at times. Please remember to state your position clearly and always be polite and gracious.
