Hey Bob,

Sounds like you should be concerned. Are you anemic? I'm not a doctor (but I

play one on the Internet). Are you taking your B12? I'd see a blood

specialist ASAP.

Bob,

Hope everything turns out OK. Keep us posted. We've come too far to let

something interfere with our now normal lives. I'll be thinking of you as you

search for the answers. Maybe others on the net will have some ideas or can

consult with their docs on your behalf. Keep fighting the good fight.

Bob,

I must echo 's comments about B12. My nutritionist put me on B12 shots

before I even had the surgery. Pernicious Anemia will develop later on when

B12 is not absorbed. Even with a proximal you will malabsorb B12. Our

nutritionist works with our surgeon and has worked with WLS patients for

years. I trust her knowledge in this area.

The drop in blood sugar levels is amazing. Mine dropped so much that my

diabetes is gone and my eyesight improved so much as a result that I've had

to have my eyeglasses changed 3 times!

Please take care of yourself my friend.

Thanks, Bob

According to the primary doc I am not anemic and he says my blood is all

right.

I have another appointment in a couple weeks I will double check with him.

but I can't keep from thinking that he somehow is dropping the ball. Problem

is that I can't make a move without his o k. and my b12 is suppose to be all

right. I have never taken a B12. both the reg Doc. and the surgeon says I'm

all right with that

Bob,

I don't know the answer on the blood cells, but I do know that you can have

symptoms of low blood sugar when it appears normal. Actually if your body

is used to blood sugars in the 200s, a normal blood sugar feels like very

low to your body...I think the low blood sugar thing takes getting used to

for your body to feel normal when your test says normal...do you have a

meter to check it yourself?

The shakes certainly are a symptom of low blood sugar....did you try eating

something....usually a high sugar or carb will bring you out of it and then

you drop even lower....the best thing is the same thing we have to do to

lose the weight...concentrate on the protein spaced not more than a few

hours apart...

Good luck to you...let us know what you find out on your bloodwork.

One more thing, Bob,

From what I read and what Jan and I have decided....B12 should be started

immediately after surgery. The deficiencies don't show up for nearly a

year, but then they are much harder to correct. Jan can chime in and give

you the right " language " , but you need to get those B12 shots...once a month

at the minimum, unless for some reason you are running really high....my

surgeon said once a month forever.

I'm just wondering for those who do do the shots - are you

still tested to see what your levels for B12 are? are they

in a healthy range?

I was taking sublingual daily and my B12 went sky high - on

a scale of 300-900 mine was up to 1810 so I had to stop

taking them. what led me to start was that I was tired and

it was my low iron, which didn't show up as low initially on

bloodwork. now its corrected with a time released iron

pill taken daily. [i tried ones that were not time released

and my levels fell even further.] there is also B12 and C in

the time released iron pill.

I guess my point is that not everyone needs the extra B12 -

at least not according to my bloodwork - I didn't need it.

Bob,

I've been doing some investigation because of my own low iron & because

myself & 2 other WLS'ers have gotten Restless Legg Syndrome (RLS) ...

here's a small contribution directly copied from a pamphlet I got from

my hemotologist (for what its worth):

There are 3 basis types of cells that " swim around " in your blood 1) red

cells, 2) white cells & 3) platelets. It takes all three types of cells

working properly together to perform your blood's vital bodily tasks.

Red: these are the greatest number of blood cells & are made in the

bone marrow & main job is to carry oxygen. Red cells have an

iron-containing substance called hemoglobin that gives your blood its

red color, & gives red cells their ability to take up oxydent in the

lungs.

White: Made in bone marrow & in certain lymphoid tissues. White cells

are larger than red cells & are fewer in number. Main role is to

safeguard body against infection & disease.

Platelets: The smallest cells & are responsible for clotting.

Platelet Deficiency: a shortage of platelets in the blo0d is called

" thrombocytopenia " and results in leaks in the blood-vessel walls.

Signs of platelet deficiency include easy bruising.

I just looked at a copy of my last blood test & its says 385 K/ul for

platelets... I think doctors don't pay attention when its something they

are unfamiliar with. I would find a reputable hemotologist... take a

copy of your blood test to her/him... ask them for help & refer you to

another doc as needed. Please keep looking into this. Request a

legible copy from every test you get from every doctor. I have all of

my counts if you ever want to compare numbers with me...

Wishing you well,

Trish

Bob,

I hope your doctors are right, but this is one time you don't have to

completely rely on their word. If you don't have them, call the

receptionist at the doctors office (or drop by) & ask if she would

please mail you a copy of all your blood tests... you can see these

things for yourself. It may not be anything big, but shaking does not

sound typical... I would find another doctor who understands or will

investigate to see what this might mean. If you have to rely on his

referral to another doctor (hmo - type insurance), please tell him you

WANT him to refer you, even if he doesn't want to... all he can do is

say " no " , but please say the words & ask... I sure hope a list member(s)

has a thought or direction that might lead to help.

Since everyone is talking about blood work and all I have been told that I

have low blood sugar. At times I shake, sweat and feel like I am going to

faint and get dizzy and feel terrible. Anybody else with this problem and

what do you do? It just comes out of no where. My ears also ring.

high.... haven't been tested since... some people definately need B-12

help, but I'm not sure that I am one of them...

The doc said something similar to this. I have never had a high blood sugar.

always on the low normal side. When this happened my sister gave me some

coke and she said that it seemed to have bring the shakes to a stop. That's

why the doc said it was a low blood sugar

I have print outs of all my blood work. The surgeon from Boston is thorough

tests. That's why I like the surgeon but my pcp is starting to hedge on the

will hopefully get somewhere and I'll ask about the B12. but I've asked in

Another thing you can try (unless you don't tolerate it well) is cheese...as

the fat tends to stabilize the sugar....please don't flame me....I know very

well from personal experience that this works for people with really bad low

blood sugar problems.

There is a really good book on this subject...Diabetes Solution by Dr.

Bernstein...really explains what happens with food and low blood sugar.

Bob,

I have low blood sugar AND anemia and I have not experienced the symptons you've

described. Low blood sugar and anemia both make you feel very tired but you

don't really get the shakes from it. I did miss work the first day of my

menstrual cycle a month ago because my anemia is quite bad and I could hardly

get out of bed because I was so tired. I have been taking large dosed of

vitamins/minerals since and didn't experience as much of a " run down " feeling

this last time around.

However I have had " dumping " reactions to food that have resulted in the shakes

and a clammy, " flu-like " feeling. And yes it also knocked me off my butt and I

had to go home sick one day at work because of it. Are you sure it might not

have been a reaction to something you ate (or perhaps because you didn't eat for

a long time). I know if I go too long without food I get shaky and feel sick.

I try to eat something every 3-4 hours or so.

It's worth investigating further. Shakes and tremors can be symptoms of a more

serious problem.

Thanks for the response,

The more I find out about this and listen to " my people here in this group "

I think it's a combination of things but mostly dumping because I've noticed

and other people are reporting that a couple years down the road we can

develop more sensitivities.

And the morning this happened I had some very sweet cereal because it was

there and I was in a hurry. And one thing that I forgot to say was that when

they opened me up on 6/6/97 they found that I have cirrhosis of the liver

and the doc said that makes a low blood sugar even lower and that people

with liver disease tend to have low blood sugar.

Can you recommend a time-released iron supplement? I'm having trouble

complying with my Dr's recommendation to take iron and a time-released pill

might take away the need for three pills a day.

Also, I'm only getting B-12 once every 3 months (and I've only just started

that three months ago, despite my surgery date 6 months prior to that on

2/4/99).

The supplements issues worry me because I used a surgeon who is not a WLS

surgery specialist. He mostly uses RNY to treat stomach cancer rather than

for weight loss. As a result, my only support network is here and through

my own independent research.

Part of the complicating factor is that I *am* having some very new

symptoms I'd like help with: fatigue, decreased libido, hair loss, poor color.

I'm taking Fetrin which is distributed by Lunsco who just

happens to be about 20min. up the road from here. I assume

they are only 'distributors' and not the manufacturer but

Fetrin is the name - it's iron with vit. B12 and vit. C in

it. I take two each night and they are time released.
