Hello Mrs. Bree and welcome to the group.

What aspects of CHARGE does your son have? Dose he have vision and or

hearing issues? when you say he gets into trouble, what do you mean?

Anyways sorry for being nosy.

Welcome to the group and I am glad you found us. Self-regulation, decision

making, impulse control and all those things can be part of CHARGE Syndrome,

as well as obsessive tendencies, self abusive and/or aggressive behaviors

and large fluctuations in excessive energy and low energy - the behaviors

seen with CHARGE are so widely reported now that an entire issue of the

American Journal of Medical Genetics was published in March of 2003 in the

beginnings of trying to understand the underlying causative factors- I think

the CHARGE Foundation has some copies left.

The other aspect is that sometimes the child was able to get enough

information in through whatever vision and hearing they have to make it is

elementary, but then in middle school the gaps in the information they

receive is so wide that they either withdraw or act up.

Please share a little more info of what the specific behavioral concerns

are, and about your son, and maybe someone here will have some tips.

There is information by Brown that talks about the nature of CHARGE

that helps this make sense to people; I will attach it in a private post as

a start.

The second thing that is not specific to CHARGE is there is a test called

the Vineland that measures a student's level of social functioning. It is

used a lot with people with fetal alcohol effects, because the alcohol

damages the thinking part of the brain, making it very difficult to do

things like, plan, reason, use good judgment and so on. (Kids with CHARGE

seem to have varying degrees of executive function problems, even though why

is a very different reason) In all other ways they may be like a 16you, but

functionally they may only be like a 6yo. They are still legally

responsible for their actions, but having this information with school

hearings to determine if this is related to his disability it matters and

for a court to determine consequence and to determine how to figure out a

plan on how to deal with it, it may help to make sure this test is done.

Good luck to you!
