Guest guest
I am new to this group and wanted to get feedback about DMSA. I have a 2 1/2 year old. We did (on advisement of a local DAN! doctor) 2 rounds of DMSA 3 days on every 8 hours and 11 days apart. We did the first round with 50mg/8hr and 50mg ALA. He did great and spoke his first sentence. 2nd round the dose of DMSA was increased to 100mg. He fell apart. He was white as a ghost and his liver enzymes shot up. He was seeming to have headaches (based on him pushing playdo against his head) and I think his feet were numb. He wouldn't walk on his feet for a whole day and actually wanted me to squeeze them and put rubber bands on them. His yeast came back terribly and he is less verbal than he was previous to the DMSA. We have struggled to get him back to his starting point. I know he needs to detox and want to because I heard him say a sentence. He is 26lbs. We are scared we did some permanent damage. Does anyone have experience with this type of situation?????? Thanks Jen (Woodbury, MN)
Guest guest
Hi Jen! You're going to get the same answer a bunch of times to your question, so let me be the first ;-). 8 hour dosing is a problem for all but a minority of these kids. You don't state what your kiddo weighs, but my guess is that the 50 mg mark is way too much for a 2.5 year old. If you are reading on the website, click on the files section and read about Andy Cutler's protocol for lower doses, administered more frequently. At 2.5 years, I also wonder if he is not far enuf away from his exposures and needs DMSA alone for awhile. We added ALA pretty quickly, but my younger one was 4 when we started and had not had vaccines for many months. Hopefully someone else will chime in on this point, (I still feel like a novice sometimes and we've been at this a year). I would be very interested in which DAN doctor did this, (e- me off list if you are willing). We have been to all of them in the Twin Cities area, so nothing would surprise me. We are currently clients of the 4th one contacted, and he has two outs and a 3/2 count----prior to our second meeting!!!!! Liver damage was one of the reasons we aren't using DMSA. Also, the neutrophils, of course. And there was some research that chelating agents such as DMSA can increase the entry of mercury into motor axons (neurons)as a result of chelator-induced elevated circulating Hg (Ewan K. and Pamphlett, R Neurotoxicology 17:2:-50, 199). It was used for lead toxicity on short term basis with safety but really this is new territory. Here's my .02: take lots of advice and don't be cowed into doing anything you don't feel comfortable with. He's a little boy and you have time. Anyway, that seems a lot of DMSA. If i were to use DMSA I'd do lower dosages, much lower, and more frequently based on what I've read here on this board. You could also try something else. Guest guest
My son is also very small, 25 pounds, and Andy recommended 5-10mg of DMSA. The dose seems really high. Guest guest
> This is what my 28# daughter started on and she did pretty well. The DMSA we used originally had fillers in it that she didn't react well with.
