I thought maybe it was my blood pressure, but it is now really really low. >>> two things come to mind, both of which I have had some problems with - either the low blood pressure or possibly low blood sugar. after doing internet research and reading several books on the subject, for low blood pressure all you can do is drink lots of fluids, stay well hydrated. for the low blood sugar, eat frequent meals or snacks of complex carbs. cheese and crackers works well and you can carry these with you in case you need them suddenly. usually both of these starts with that 'out of touch' feeling and moves to a dizziness and shaking of the hands, sweating and then you might even pass out. some of the symptoms seem a lot like dumping but you have not eaten in hours. good luck, I wouldn't wish the low blood sugar on my worst enemy - luckily I have now figured out that mine only happens during my pms week so it is a little easier to keep in control. When I came hme the after my last surgery I too had the same symptoms. It was blood pressure being too low. Drink lots of water and also I craved salt. When you go from laying to sitting to standing be very careful so you don't fall. I will probably have the same problem with my revision surgery because my BP is low now. Good luck, Darlene in Pa. Guest guest
Chandra: I don't know if it's related, but I went through a period where I got dizzy more often than usual, but that has passed. I've had two things lately, though, that are new. For the past few months, my eyes are more sensisitive to light, particularly bright light like the glare of the sun on cars and stuff. Also, at night, my calves twitch and I get cramps in my feet. I know not everything is related to gastric bypass, but there are so many changes that ARE a result of the bypass that it's hard to know. Guest guest
Hi Chandra < s > I had been having the same thing for several months ...and had even made a special visit to the MAYO to see if they could help me figure it out..I was told it most probably was " delayed dumping " from food that was moving slowly through my system. Until a couple weeks ago, I believed that..but...I recently had something happen during one of those " episodes " that clarified it, unfortunately. I was having the " hazy " feeling...I hadn't eaten for a good 5 hours...and was going to go get something to drink..or some crackers..the peanut butter/cheese ones seemed to work...anyway..I ended up having a grand mal seizure...and was in the hospital for 5 days while they poked and prodded and tested, and now my neurologist believes I've developed epilepsy...seems that diagnosis is a 'throw away " one..when they can't find any other reason for a grand mal...they just put you on seizure meds..yank your drivers license, and throw you to the dogs<sigh> I would NEVER blame this on the RNY...IF I've developed it, it was most probably a result of a car accident I had a few months ago...I'm pretty depressed about it...mainly because I feel my independence is gone...my career sure is..I'm a realtor... the only info I was trying to give, really, was about the " delayed dumping " it's not the first time I've heard about this...you might check your blood sugar during the episode..I had one when I was in the hospital..and they checked mine..it was low...just a suggestion.. Guest guest
, Chandra, et al: I am presently having involuntary muscle spasms/shakes in my legs at night... am just starting to work w/a doctor on this now... she thinks its due to electrolytes out of whack... and also, I am presently trying to correct an iron deficiency.... am waiting for more test results for a more definate opinion from the doctor. I never got dizzy or lightheaded... I did become sensitive to light but only after I had laser vision correction (supposed to be normal) Trish Bandas wrote: > Chandra: > > I don't know if it's related, but I went through a period where I got dizzy > more often than usual, but that has passed. Guest guest
I also just received my blood test results and have been diagnosed with anemia (count of 7, normal count should be 12-15) and low blood sugar (which explains why I would get so sleepy after a big dose of carbs!). I am back to taking my prescription vitamins religiously and nibbling on protein every 2 hour or so to keep my blood sugar from dipping too low. I stopped taking my vitamins regularly last January and it's scary how quickly your body can become depleted. The good news is that my liver enzymes are perfectly normal as are most of my other nutritional levels. I have upped my protein in supplement form to 90 grams per day because I know I am not getting enough from eating. I figure that 90 grams is a good base and if I still think I need more protein I will add another dose of 45 grams at lunch time to bring me to 135 grams. I have arthritis in my left knee but mine is a pre-surgery condition caused by a car accident and worsened by years of morbid obesity. The other diseases that some post-ops are developing (MS, epilepsy, etc.) really concern me and I wish there was a way to determine exactly what caused them. My nutritionist has added glucosamine and chondrotin (spelling? to my supplements to help my knee and that plus regular exercise seems to help quite a bit. Thank you to everyone for sharing your medical conditions. This entire thread has really been an eye-opener for me. Betty D. Guest guest
Hi, Yes, I had much the same symptoms....it was a B12 deficiency. My symptoms were loss of memory, mind was hazzy, I would drive my car and forget where I was going, then my tongue would get sore (just the tongue muscle..not actual sores) and I would be so extremely tired I couldn't raise my chest off the mattress in the morning. Please get your B12 level checked. I give myself an injection on a regular basis now as I can't seem to absorb enough by taking B12 pills.
