Esp nonfat/skim milk? Unless you're lactose intolerant, I'd say drink up It's a good source of calcium--and there's even calcium-fortified skim milk available. Go for it. Tell them I said so. Guest guest
One of the problems with milk is that it contains a high amount of carbohydrates. For cooking I use heavy cream which has no carbs. If yu have a lactose problem try Lactaid chewables. I do and they work just fine. also Reddi Whip is a great topping with few carbs. If malabsorbtion is part of your post op life (with a distal RNY or other more radical forms of wls) you must take vitamins to replace what you do not absorb. Our surgeon has a nutritionist working with him who prescribes certain compounded (ground up and easily digested) vitamins. I take 6 of these pills a day and they contain about 30 different vitamins that are needed for wls patients. I am 12 mos post op, have lost 200 pounds and all my blood work shows normal levels of all the vitamins and minerals that I need. find a good nutritionist who is experienced in treating wls patients and get on a vitamin regimen asap. Guest guest
You are allowed milk. Some doctors want their patients to avoid all sugars (including natural like fructose and lactose). However, most doctors say that milk is a very good source of protein and should be used. If you can stomach it (are not lactose intolerant) don't worry about it and go for it. I use milk continuously for both protein and calcium. Rasley mailto:drasley@... For cooking I use heavy cream which has no carbs. I know I am supposed to lurk (since I am pre-op til 11/01), but I wanted to set this straight. Heavy cream still has a significant number of carbs (about 7gr in 1 cup). The reason the carton may say 0 carbs or <1 carb is that is for a SERVING SIZE OF 1 TABLESPOON. 1 TBSP has less than .5 gr of carb and the USDA allows <.5 to be rounded to 0! A good resource for checking these sorts of things is the USDA database at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl I'll return to my corner and try to lurk for another year! Guest guest
Still less carbs than milk and you don't have to use as much. Since I only have about 40-50 grams of carbs a day I can afford the few I get in the cream. I don't use much and not that often. Guest guest
Hey - thank you for the wonderful web site! nice one! by my read, 1 cup of heavy cream has less than 3 grams of carbs... vs. 1 cup of milk which has more than 12... I think thats a pretty big difference. Good luck on Monday!!! LMM wrote: > Heavy cream still has a significant number of carbs (about 7gr in 1 > cup).
