Update on lil' Miss Aubrie. Remember she was sick with what I think was

just a long-term stomach virus for 11 days? Well, now she's been out of

school since Tues with what we thought was a sinus infection. She got

antibiotic on Wed for that. Our pediatrician is out of town so we've

been seeing GPs that are new to our local clinic. That makes me

nervous, but one turned out to be great. The ped's nurse was there so

she made sure that the new dr had all the info he'd needed and

understood what the ped would be doing for Aubrie.

Anyhow, Thu we went back to the dr cuz she was having a high fever. My

kids never run fevers even when they do have strep or ear infections...

so this was very weird. Aubrie's never had more than 100 before and

this was 103+. Very scary. So the dr tested her for influenza and

strep - both were neg. So we increased her anitbiotic dosage and went

home alternating motrin and tylenol to keep the fever down. So far so

good. Then Fri am the fever was shooting back up past 104! So off we

go back to the dr. Me with no sleep and no shower -- and we spent from

11:30 - 3:30 at the dr and the hospital. Had urine test (she couldnn't

pee on command - hence the long wait!), blood test, and chest xray.

Turns out she has some fluid in the right lung. So we decided it was a

viral pneumonia. I was all ready for another long night, but the kid

slept wonderfully! I woke her every 3 hrs for meds, but other than

that, it was a peaceful night. And she's back to herself today. Go

figure. Just when we were done with all the local testing and ready to

go to St Louis for the vomiting, she was miraculously better -- same

here. Get to my wits' end, and then she's surely improve!

It's just so weird cuz she's not an ill kid. We're to the dr all the

time for her congenital stuff, but not usually illnesses. This month,

she's had stomach virus, sinus infection, and pneumonia! I think she's

been to school only 3 or 4 days since Christmas break. Good thing is

there's been no ear infections and no tubes since last spring. That's

an accomplishment! And we have found a dr we like when the ped is out.

As always, I'm very thankful that my life and work are set up so that I

can stop everything and deal with these things as they come up.

Gotta run. Take care!

Michele,

Was it viral pneumonia all along, just not diagnosed?

Poor all of you--although I am glad it has a name and that she is soon to be on

the (complete and long-term, hopefully) mend.

Michele,

when it rains it pours huh? My boys were constantly sick with sinus

infections, viruses (of the stomach and chest, and even walking

pneumonia twice!!! Every cold turned into bronchitis... it was

never ending. This year they have been fine (knock on wood). Hang

in there. I know that dirty exhausted feeling. Spring is just

around the corner... sort of!

hi Michele

Josh has been the same, some people look at me weirdly when i say " he

doesn't get sick that often " :0) well, i suppose we have ended up in

hospital with him for a lot for operations, electrolyte level stuff!

glad to hear that Aubrie is on the mend - and you too - maybe she's

having one of those years, i know sometimes i catch everything going and

then i'm fine for a few more years ;0)

I really think she did have a sinus infection too cuz she had all the

symptoms and they got better with anitbiotics. So I'm not sure how long

she had the pneumonia. She's still doing great today. Go figure.

Michele,

Glad she is getting back on track. Sounds quite a scary time for you.

We've sort of had the same run of one thing following another (current one

is diarrhoea and vomiting) but at least we have known what it was as

's sister keeps picking up all these nasties from nursery and

generously passing them on to her big sis. I can imagine how nerve-racking

it must be not to have any idea what the problem is. Fingers crossed that

the upward progress continues.

Michele,

The poor little thing. She is such a toughie. Reminds me of who! I bet she

had the phneumonia all along. Do you know how to cup her back to release the

fluid? Even though she might appear better I would still do it anyway.

Then give her a hug and a kiss from us.

Michele,

Have her lay across your lap, chest down with her head low. Her lungs should

be lower than her abdomen. Support her head with one arm. Then with your

other arm cup your hand and pound on her back. Don't do this unless your hand is

cupped. I mean don't do it flathanded. It has to be hard enough to loosen the

mucus but don't hurt her, obvoiusly! And don't hit her spine area. Start

from her mid section working up to her shoulder area. Also when you do it

rotate

that by rubbing her back again from mid section up to her shoulders. Tell

her to cough up whatever she can. I have paper towels ready for her to spit the

stuff into. All this loosens the fluid and mucus. Oh, but don't have her

head too low, that's when Patty chokes. Otherwise Patty loves it.

Have fun!

I'll give it a whirl. She's still not feeling herself, but she's not

running a fever so we're on our way to wellness, I think. We'll see if

she feels up to school tomorrow.

Bonnie,

You bring back memories. Not the greatest ones but we did the same thing

when had pneumonia. She ended up in the hospital all four times and the

Respiratory Therapist taught us. I got to watch them first so it was easy.

got a pneumonia shot in 9th grade after having pneumonia in 8th. She

hasn't had it since. Just her ususal winter URIs.

I hope it stays that way.

Michele,

Hope Aubrie is feeling much better.

Blessings and Hugs.

oh, I am so sorry !

Just you and Miss Aubrie hang in there. Don't worry about the school missed

right now, and please don't even think about the angels that have passed.

was Mr. Respiratory for many years - it was bad when we were

alternating full doses of Advil and Tylenol every two hours, pounding his

chest and back constantly - a team of five us of working in shifts,

flooding his system with expectorants, decongestants, liquid steroids and

nebulizer therapies. It was round the clock battle care. Finally, once, he

went into the hospital for iv antibiotics.

If it is any consolation, and his brother Elliot both got the flu two

weeks ago. started with a high (105) fever for a day and kept an on

and off fever of about 100 for a week. Elliot doesn't run fevers as high,

but at 102 he was a pretty sad puppy at first. After a week, the coughing

set in. So we still have the coughing, and still an occasional fever - but

no relentless 102 or above as I usually see with a secondary bacterial

infection. Actually I wouldn't have known to check 's temperature

after five days, because he was behaving his complete normal self - we just

did it because Elliot was sick! Sometimes I think I should just check our

temperature every four hours round the clock all year like we used to in the

NICU... lol!

I hope she mends quickly -

Wishing you well-

Aubrie's worse again. On Sat, I was sure she was on the mend. After

all that time at the dr on Fri, she didn't have anymore fever all night

and then all day Sat. DJ and I went to his work Christmas and had a

great time out. Sunday she was still without fever, not really herself

yet, but improving, I thought. Then Sunday night the fever was back

don't know how much more she'll miss since I don't know when she'll ever

get better and how I'll know that she's better. It'll take at least a

few days of being totally herself before I'll believe it's for real.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I know it's not a big deal as far as

CHARGE stuff goes, but it's driving me nuts. And then there's that

Ditto to all Yuka said above Michele. You have enough to worry about just

looking after her. I'm sure she will catch up with school soon enough.

Hang in there and I hope the problem is identified and Aubrie bounces to her

i hope she gets better, if your regular docs are baffled, i'd get a

pulmonary consult if she continues to have respitory issues. i know

little colds can require some heavy duty stuff with my son, pulmonary

is the first place i call if he gets sick, he has a trach, so thats

one reason, but they are more familiar with the needs of special

needs kids with or without trachs. good luck
