Hi, I am . Also new here (I tried to post a reply earlier but it

did not appear, so apologies if I end up with two replies here).

I'm also 52, also UK and had BHR done last November by Mr McMinn,

from

the same team in Birmingham.

The fitter patients seemed to progress a lot quicker. I used to use

(as a change from the bike) a small trampoline exerciser which my

daughter owns. Low impact, good exercise and fun (do it to music).

She bought hers from Index stores - it is labelled " Body Sculpture " .

Argos sell one which looks identical from the catalogue photo -

they call it a " trampette " .

My outcome is excellent - no pain, no limp, playing sports again.

Incidentally, Mr McMinn was interested to hear that my father had m/m

replacements (using the same metal) 28 years ago. He X-rayed him for

his research and found that they are still " perfect " . Good news for

us!

I assume you are going to Birmingham Nuffield. They look after you

well, good team of physios.

Best of luck.

Hi Arlene,

You sound like me :-) ! I'm 50 and just had m/m resurfacing done on my left

hip -- due to congenital hip dysplasia -- this past January at the JRI in

Los Angeles. Preop I too rode a stationary bike as walking was just too

painful. And yes, I needed to lose weight -- Dr. Amstutz minced no words on

that, so I managed to lose about 12-15 before the surgery. Before the

surgery one other exercise I did was to do leg lifts out to the side (I did

this in several variations: lying down, kneeling, standing up) to strengthen

the hip/leg muscles that would be operated on. Since your surgery is pretty

close at hand, that would probably be the best one for you to do, if you

aren't already.

You will be surprised at how quickly you're on the mend after this

operation; I was and still am. I tell everybody that if anyone had ever said

how good I'd feel at this point -- 5 months postop -- I just flat-out

wouldn't have believed them. I used a cane for 2-3 years before surgery, so

I guess I'd subconsciously adjusted any expectations downward. Boo on me! I

am so glad I had this done; it almost feels as if I'd never had surgery.

Best to you,

Louise
