I'm glad you have a physician with whom you can have open and honest discussions. My FP doctor who initially explained to me what pancreatitis was back in November, 1982 is still my physician, and is a great listener during flare-ups, and good about making sure I have the medication needed to get through them. That helps significantly. One of the major differences in that back in 1982, I didn't have anyone else who spoke with who had a clue about what was going on. Even now, I have some friends who insist that I just get it fixed. Its difficult to explain sometimes that it is an ongoing problem, and " cures " are not out there. As you probably read, I had a procedure done to reduce/eliminate " pain " , and so far with the exception of post-op sillyness, think i'm doing ok...well at least no pancreatitits pain that I can distinguish...still on Vicoden for muscle type soreness...and the ole enzymes to keep the juices flowing so to speak. I also take Prevacid in the am....and Vioxx...even though I can't feel it...I'm still pampering...
Guest guest
Becky, I've only been a member for a little over a month. What I have learned from this group has helped me to make decisions and discuss my illness with my doctor in an intelligent, informed manner. I must share with the group my visit with my dr. yesterday. We discussed the use of enzymes & their purpose. There seems to be confusion as to why they must or should be taken. He told me that their purpose was 2-fold: to assist the pancreas in digestion therefore allowing it to rest somewhat & to allow for absorption of nutrients. However, regulating them can be tricky. They are used mostly to digest fats & proteins, carbs aren't nearly as much a problem ( & I eat mostly carbs, a few proteins occasionally & very little fat). That's not good either. We're working on trying to introduce some fat with the use of the enzymes. He also put me on Zantac 2x daily rather than Prevacid. Next, we discussed the spasming--no explanation other than perhaps the enzymes weren't doing their job. I was diagnosed with sod (sphincter of odie dysfunction). I asked him just how many pancreatic patients he sees a year & how many were repeats. He said 25-30 with the majority of reoccuring patients being alcoholic induced (those who continue to drink). The rest are results of pancreatic divisum, drug or virus induced, & ideopathic (sod being one of these). When i quizzed him on the # of returning sod patients, he said that in his experience, most do not have a recurrence after a sphincterotomy. So, why am I still suffering? He didn't know & told me my chances are 50/50 either way, but not to give up hope. Finally, I asked why there is such conflicting views as to what is acute & chronic. He said that chronic becomes chronic after several recurring 'acute' attacks! Go figure! He kind of smiled while explaining this! Before leaving, I thanked him for being so supportive & honest with me. He offered to make another referral now or in the future to the specialist I saw at in St. Louis, MO. I told him that I trusted him implicitly & felt that for the time being I did not need to see another md & would give my pancreas some more time to attempt to heal. Thanks for listening, everybody. I hope there was something useful in this info! Cheryl --- Becky and wrote: > > > Hi Sherri, > > I too am new and am just finding out I have > Pancreatitis. So this > whole thing is new to me. Guest guest
Shari, I was just curious about your " singing pampered chef " signature. Are you a chef? just like to cook? sell Pampered Chef? or all of the above?! I LOOOOVE to cook. My husband & I have belonged to a gourmet club for about 7 years now. I still prepare foods (usually breads or salads) & suffer the next day after dinner. But I refuse to give it up! I'm getting a brand new kitchen (just about an entire new house!!!) & can't wait to get in my new domain! Guest guest
Cheryl, I love to cook, which led to my love of the Pampered Chef products which led to my over spending which led to me becoming a Pampered Chef consultant!!! Now I get everything in the catalog either free or half price...much better on my spending habits. Mostly I cook for my family when I have to test recipes before I prepare them for one of my " hostesses " . I am so leery of eating now that I had this last horrible attack of Pancreatitis, so I don't do much cooking or eating right now. I do love my job, though. I only work about 10 - 15 hours a week (40 - 60 per month) and I get paid way over the top...one show I ended up making over $34 an hour!!! What is not to love? Especially if you like showing people how wonderful their time in the kitchen can be! Anyway, I am sure sorry to meet you and the rest of the Pancreatitis sufferers in this way, but it is so nice to have the support available. Guest guest
I wondered, too. I love to cook as well and I just bought some of those Pampered Chef gadgets (love them!).
