My son (also 4 yrs old) is on three different meds - clonazapam, phenobarb

and dilantin as well as the keto diet. We are starting to wean the

dilantin as it is the "worst" one he is on right now as side effects go.

We are 4 days into a wean and so far so good - knock on wood!! With

each wean I see him get better and better - altho we may yet experience

some withdrawl seizures. He should be off this one in about 3 months

and we will then start on the phenobarb.

I do not know if there is a specific order to wean meds when a child

is on more than one. Right now the neuro suspects that the clonazapam

is working (altho I think it is the diet that is actually stopping the

myoclonics) so that will be the last one weaned. The neuro is already

talking about putting him on a different med once the pheno and dilantin

are gone. I dont know yet if I will let this happen as I would really

like to give the diet a chance to work meds free. I have heard more

than one person say that things work better once the child is meds free

and I looking back and knowing what I know now I would've really liked

to start this all meds free.

Hopefully you get the answers you are looking for.

How is it the order of weaning meds decided

After sorting through the advice from all of you, I emailed Wyatt's neuro

about beginning to wean Keppra. He appeared to me to be on his way to being

toxic on it. His neuro told me that she has noticed that Keppra can

sometimes bring on jack knife seizures which Wyatt was having again, so she

agreed to begin weaning. We are about halfway through the weaning and I am

already seeing a much more alert little boy! I am going slower on the

weaning than the schedule she gave me and so far I have not seen any

increase in seizures.

Thank you again for your help.

Congrats on starting the wean and not seeing an increase in seizures!

We are currently weaning dilantin and Mike has now gone a full 48 hrs (a

bit more already) without any seizures! I am still waiting for them

tho - seems too good to be true.

Hope things stay "smooth sailing" for you and Wyatt.
