Someone had mentioned Dr. Mont as very good with conventional replacement

in an earlier posting. I e-mailed him and he sent a response to contact his

office, however I had already been added to Dr. Vail's list. Durham NC is

much closer to home for me. I am sure he is top notch!

He's good enough for Coach " K " , if that means anything.

Krzyzewski has hip replacement surgery

By Caulton Tudor / Raleigh News & Observer

April 5, 1999

DURHAM, N.C. -- A potentially eventful week

for Duke's basketball program began on a

positive note when head coach Mike Krzyzewski

underwent successful hip-replacement

surgery Sunday at Duke Hospital.

Operating a day ahead of the original

schedule, Dr. P. Vail said the two-hour

procedure on Krzyzewski's left hip -- termed a

major surgery by the doctor -- was

completed at approximately 11 a.m. without

complications.

" The surgery went really well from the

beginning, " Vail said at an afternoon news

conference.

" He was anticipating the operation and

looking forward to it. There were really no

problems. The hip fits quite stable and moves

well. "

Added the coach's wife, Mickie, " We're

delighted it's done and Mike is extremely glad to

have it over. "

Krzyzewski, 52, is scheduled to begin

physical therapy Monday and could remain

hospitalized until Thursday or Friday. Within a

month or so, he should be walking with a

cane. Two or so weeks after that, he'll be back

to near full speed, Vail said.

All parties were in an upbeat mood late

Sunday.

I'm in a similar situation except that I had not planned to have the

surgery done by Dr. Amstutz. One of the other approved locations is

Baltimore where the surgeries will be done by Dr. Mont. From

what I can gather, he has done a lot of conventional hip and knee

replacements; but, of course, this is the first time he will be doing

hip resurfacing. Does anyone know of him by reputation or personally?

I had Perthes as a child and have been doing a lot of research since I

became a hip replacement candidate. I was aiming for the Sulzer

metal-to-metal prosthesis until I became aware that Dr. Mont would be

doing hip resurfacing starting this Fall. Thanks for any information.

Dr. Mont did my resurfacing on July 11, 2000. This is not a new procedure

for him. However, I've noticed that the term " resurfacing " is used to mean 2

different things by some on the surfacehippy board. The resurfacing that Dr.

Mont has been doing up to now is the resurfacing of the femoral head only,

retaining the original acetabulum. He uses Medical Technology's

Conserve prosthesis. In this Fall's FDA trials, he will be using the

Conserve Plus prosthesis. That one includes both the acetabular and femoral

components.

More than 30 of Dr. Mont's written articles have been published; a record

for physicians at s Hopkins. He's a friendly, personable doctor. After

surgery, you'll be given his home telephone number and he encourages you to

use it at any time you have questions. I'm very happy with the treatment

I've received from him.

Just to let you know that I was told by Dr. Mont himself that he has

probably done more hip resurfacing than anyone in the world, mostly for the

avascular necrosis condition. He has also done THRs, so the only thing that

will be new to him is the Conserve Plus prothesis itself. He also told me

that he had accompanied a friend to California for bilateral resurfacing by

Dr. Amstutz, so I think he's a good choice. His new position at Sinai

Hospital is as Director of the Joint Preservation and Reconstruction Center,

a new facility. Good Luck.

Dear :

My name is Ivan Dekovic and I live in California, USA.

I have O.A. in my right hip. I have a scheduled surgery for Dec. 28, 2000

with Dr. Amstutz, but it is not sure that he will get the implant from FDA.

Besides, I need to have the surgery early than that, because I am under a

lot of pain and my hip is getting very bad.

Could you please get for me all the Mr. McMinn information (ph. Fax. E-mail,

Address, etc.), in order for me to contac him directly and A.S.A.P.

I also, believe that he is the most experienced Dr. in this field.

Best regards, I thank you in advance.

Dr Mont may have some competition for that title. Certainly a year

ago, Mr McMinn believed he had done more resurfacings than anyone

else. He has been leading the work in England for almost ten years,

and the week I had mine done I reckon he must have done about 15, so

Dr Mont must be going some!

Perhaps we should get the Guinness Book of Records on it :o)
