Do the pills dissolve well in water?

Hannah started the diet at Kennedy Krieger

Institute (part of s

Hopkins) last week. She's right now just on four feedings

of ketocal a

day (she feeds by gtube), although we'll be trying to introduce

small

amounts of solid food either the end of this week or early next

week.

I just wanted to say that the experience there was fantastic.

Patti

, their nutritionist, is wonderful, and worked out very detailed

instructions and menus for us. While Hannah was hospitalized

(five

days), she also had pt, ot and s & l evals, although she wasn't

at her

best (to put it mildly!). By the time we were to fly home

on Sunday,

Hannah had pretty much adapted to the diet and was more awake and

alert.

She's now back to herself with one major exception -- no seizures

since

her glucose levels dropped in anticipation of the diet. Hannah

has

complex partials, they usually came in clusters, the clusters happening

anywhere from once a day to several times a day. In addition,

she has a

lot of generalized slowing and copious spiking on her eeg that

doesn't

show as clinical seizures.

Hannah's neuro at KKI said that he does not want us to even think

about

reducing her meds for at least two months, and warned that we might

not

in the end want to do so. He mentioned that Freeman has adopted

this

new attitude towards the meds weaning as well, as research is showing

that the diet may work in conjunction with the meds. If and

when we

ever do wean, he said it should be over a period of two months,

as

Hannah has become physically dependent on the drugs and he wants

us to

avoid withdrawal seizures.

This may sound stupid, but does anyone have any tips on how to crush

these darn pills so as not to lose anything in the process? The

pharmacy

showed us to use filter paper and pound the things, but it seems

like

something always ends up sticking to the paper.

We use a pill crusher that we bought from the pharmacy. Take the lid off, drop the pills in, put the lid back on and screw it on tightly, crushing the tabs underneath it. Take lid off and tip out powdered pills. Voila!

Hope this helps

We broke down and bought a pharmacist's mortar and pestle, since we deal with such a volume of pills. I scrape it out with a rubber spatula when done and that wipes the powder out quite well. After using it about 2 months, I'm sold! Rose-Marie, 's mom This may sound stupid, but does anyone have any tips on how to crush these darn pills so as not to lose anything in the process? The zyrtec takes forever to dissolve but will eventually. The

tranxene dissolves easily, but the tegretol is tough to dissolve.

We've already had a couple of problems when the tegretol pieces were

still a bit too large and almost jammed the feeding tube.

We went yesterday and bought one of those plastic pill crushers, but

we still ended up with some bigger pieces of tegretol, and still had

the problem of pill dust that wouldn't come out of the crusher. :(

A friend of mine gave me a great idea. I dont know if this would

work for you (we mix ours with water). I take the plunger part out

of the syringe, put that little end thingie on the tip, and drop in the

pills, add water and replace the plunger part- you will have to turn the

syringe over and take off the little thingie for the plunger to go back

in (have to be careful doing this or you will end up with water everywhere)

Wait til the pills are dissolved and it is ready. We used to

dissolve Mike' pills in meds cups but we were always leaving something

behind. After I give Mike his meds I draw up a bit of plain water

into the syringe to get the little bit remaining so he gets everything.

It works really well when I remember to do it.

To get the dust and crumbs out of the pill crusher (or mortar/pestle) I just drizzle a few mls of water around the sides, from a syringe, to wash all the excess down to the bottom, and then suck it back up into the syringe to give with the rest of the meds. I always check that the equipment is dry before using it again though.
