Just one other thing. . .and then I'll get off my

soapbox (promise!). . . as one doc wisely told me,

don't focus completely on the seizures. . .you don't

want to get her seizure free and then set her up for

cancer and other potential problems down the road.

Hopkins and other docs may say okay to NutraSweet

because it's not proven to mess with the diet. . . but

that doesn't mean that it's healthy. Hope this makes

sense and that I'm not offending anyone. It's just

beyond me that they actually okay the stuff. . . I'm

still not over the shock that our neuro suggested Bugs

Bunny sugar-free which contains it. . . why would you

ever give a child a vitamin with nutra sweet??!!--D

Hi Rhonda,

I know that some families have found that aspartame is a seizure trigger. I have avoided using it because of information I read in a book called "Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills" by Dr. Blaylock. You can read more about what is known about aspartame at www.excitotoxins.com . Many kids don't have a problem with it but it's hard to know what the long term effects are. It's totally an individual decision.... some families use it, others don't. I think it's up to you.

There is a natural sweetener that is OK for use with the Keto diet. It's called STEVIA. Stevia is made from an herb that grows in South America. It's a carb-free and calorie-free sweetener with none of the chemical side-effects that may potentially be problems with some of the artificial sweeteners. I have use it for my daughter on the diet for the past 16 months and we like it a lot. It's available in natural foods stores or online. The one I use is made by NuNaturals (www.nunaturals.com ) .... you need to be sure to buy a pure extract, either powder or liquid. A little goes a LONG way... it's extremely sweet. You wouldn't have the convenience of the sugar-free Jello, because you'd have to figure out desserts to make yourself using stevia. It can be used to sweeten their whipped cream, or to make ice cream, and works well in cheesecakes.

Patti, mom to Katera, age 5..... Keto since 10-10-2000, med-free, seizure-free (except for a rare seizure with fever).

aspartame

We have been told to avoid products which have aspartame in it. Why? We do give our daughter sugarless Jello gelatin every day (favorite snack with cream). I have not found any other sugarless jello products here. Unless someone convinces us that we should not do this, we will continue to give her this favorite snack. I noticed that all diet pops contain aspartame. Is this a "no" as well?

I made jello for lin by using Knox gelatine packets, unsweetened cherry koolaid (no maltodextrin) and Stevia. There is a cherry koolaid now that is blue (no red dye) but it actually tastes like cherry. Anyway, lin thought it was wonderful!

We use unsweetened koolaid, knox gelatin,

and sweetner to make jello.

We received an electronic food scale

from the U.S. Unfortunately it weighs in increments of 5gms.

Ugh!!!!! It will have to go back. What brand do you use that

weighs in increments of 1gm? Does the Weight Watcher's scale weigh

in increments of 1gm?

We are using a MARS scale. The

one we have weighs in increments of 1gm up to 400 gms. We had one

that did 200 gms by 1gm but it broke and was very hard to get parts for

it here in Canada - these scales are both from the US. I am very

impressed with the MARS scale.

Great thanks I will have to keep my eyes out for it.

Can someone tell me if corn dextrin is the same as maltodextrin? Is

it something to stay away from as well. And remember to check the

labels - altho there is a small amount, the unsweetened koolaid in canada

contains sugar! (would've been nice if the dietician had told me that when

she told me to give Mike koolaid - she never said anything about the maltodextrin

either)

I am pretty sure corn dextrin is another no no, I wouldn't touch it unless

calculated anyhow. Mind if I smack your dietican?? :)

What do you use for sweetner, we use sugar twin, but it has to be liquid,

powder form has malodextrin.

Dakota was doing well until 3 days ago. She began having violent drop seizures again -- several in a row. It took me 2 days, many prayers and a couple of times of beating my head against the wall to realize what it was. She has developed a cough, and I thought I would be a good mommy and search for a coulgh medicine she could take. I found Diabetic Tussin and gave her a dose -- boom -- drop seizures for an hour or so. Then I realized that the day before she had drank a diet coke and the day before that a diet sprite. i have taken all aspartame away and changed nothing else and she has regained control! Some kids are sensitive to aspartame, and I guess we are one!

We are just about to begin week 4 on the keto diet. Things are going well. Shan had only 1 sz. break through and that was 13 days ago. It seems she may be breaking her every 10-13 day sz. cycle. We've begun to slowly wean off Topamax and so far so good.

Hi,

We had the same experience with Rebekah with diet pop and the Bugs Bunny vitamins. Soon learned that we had to live without aspartame and replace it with stevia(a natural sweetner) which has been a life saver. I sometimes give her soda water with stevia and flavoring which doesn't taste quite the same as pop but it's something different for a change.
