Lynn,

Can stress effect the Pancreas? I know it effects my Crohns Disease for

sure. Yes, I have been very stressed the last 2 days. Maybe that was all it

was. Thanks for your opinion, I appreciate it.

Lynn,

I've had " tummy aches " before but they were nothing like the pain I had when

the Pancreatitis reared it ugly head. Last night it felt like the Pancreas,

but like you said, some of the symptoms can be the same.

I too am affected adversely by stress. I was told by my doctor that this is

a natural occurrence. Stress will exacerbate any situation. If you have a

headache and you get stressed, your headache will get worse. The same goes

for pancreatitis. Anyone else has heard something similar? I hate to have

to rely on what doctor's tell me (smile).

P.S. This is an extremely bad day. Sometimes I feel as if I can't take any

more of this pain and vomiting!

I am sorry to hear you are having a bad day. I can't say I know how you

feel, at least not in a chronic way. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I get another blood test on Monday and will find out Wednesday what my doc is

going to do about my " Acute Pancreatitis. "

Take care,

Jody

Lynn,

The blood test is to check the Amalase and Lipase levels in your Pancreas.

My Amalase level was normal last time and my Lipase was still at 555. The

Lipase should be at a max of 286. I guess that tells the doc how bad it is.

I am not sure because if I'm not having bad symptoms then why would it matter

what the blood level is? Now I'm confused. I have been getting blood tests

about every 1 1/2 weeks for the last 7 weeks. Apparently I will continue to

get them periodically until they are in the normal range.

I'll find out Wednesday, unless someone else can answer you first.

Lynn,

I think they are talking about a serum amylase and serum lipase tests. It is

a simple blood workup, nothing to worry about. Whenever you are having an

attack, those two " things " elevate. That's as much as I KNOW About this.

Anyone else wish to add or correct?

i would be curious to know, jody...like i said they never said anything about

doing bloodwork until i had another attack...and then i was to go to the nearest

ER and tell them i wanted to have my amalase and lipase checked, as well as

liver function and triglycerides....anybody have any ideas??? should i be

getting checked regularly??? does everyone get theirs checked periodically??

mine was still elevated several days after my last ERCP which triggered a

horrible attack!!

You know, my doc almost never checks my blood levels. I wonder why that

is?

I guess I shouldn't wonder. I'm actually feeling human again for the

longest span (not counting two days last week) since all this started in

June '99.... :)

Hope everyone is having a good, painfree day! I have to go put up 50+

square bales of hay for those ungrateful horses for whom I slave...

Yesterday, we put up 10 4'x4' round bales (500lbs? ...very heavy

anyway), but at least the tractor did most of the work. I'll probably

feel like crap later tonight... *sigh* LOL!

Yes!!! I find that when I get stressed out, it takes me a long time to

recuperate. I used to fly off the handle some times and now it seems if I

get angry (frustrated or stressed out) I have no energy to be REALLY mad.

It's like I need a nap, if I get upset about something! ha ha ha (kind of

bizarre! Does anyone else experience this)

The same for me. When I get really angry or upset, my pain really jumps up

and intensifies. In most cases, once I have calmed down somewhat, and the

pain somewhat subsides, I usually will have to take a nap. This is extremely

difficult while at work (smile).

Hi all,

I believe that 50% or at least a large quantity of my pain is due to my

stress. And vice versa. When I hurt I get irritable, when I get irritable my

16 yr. old daughter gets an attitude, when she gets an attitude I get tense.

It is a viscous cycle. Last month I asked my Psychiatrist to order Xanax.

This has helped tremendously. Depending on what has been going on I take a

Xanax first before the narcotics. I have noticed that sometimes that helps my

anxiety and I am able to relax. It is hard to get the doctor's to order what

I know would probably work for me. I had asked my other doctor's first and

they all said no. They said Xanax was addictive and I didn't need anything

that would make me drowsy.

Like, who cares. I have no quality of life anymore, anyway. At least the

Psychiatrist understood. He said he trusted me to use my judgment on the

amount of all the meds I took, i.e., the narcotics and anti-anxiety meds.

would not get to me, thank GOD it didn't. >>

Hi Marie, all,

I remember when you wrote that post. I certainly can relate to it. And prayer

seems the only way out. Sometimes stress has been a good tool for stimulating

action, but the stress associated with trying to fulfill the role and

responsibility of a mother quickly turns into distress for me. There have

been numerous posts about the role stress plays on our disease. So,

personally I can't afford to have it. Distress, that is. We can't completely

avoid all the stresses in our life.

This past weekend I was completely incapacitated with pain (my morphine pump

had broken and I didn't realize it) and my 16 y/o pregnant daughter was left

to try and take care of me. Knowing that added more stress to my situation.

Finally, Sunday, a friend came over, realized the situation, called my home

care nurse, and the problem was rectified within a short while.

I can't go back and change how much burden and stress this placed on my

daughter. We talked about it later last night. She was in tears about how

torn she was trying to take care of me and take care of her. She told me she

could not handle the stress, it was just too much.

Today, I have taken action to try to avoid a similiar situation again. I know

that I have to face the inevitable stresses this disease brings to the entire

household. For me, sometimes I only have enough energy to ask God to get me

through the more stressful times. At least to minimize the apologies and

amends I owe others from the insanity that such high level of stress brings.

Karyn - all,

I am taking a three hour mini course in Stress, Crisis, and Coping to finish

up my masters program in social work. It is crunched into a two week period

where we go everyday so it is very intense, however it really appears to be

very applicable to what all of us are having to deal with. I am learning how

stress really does affect our bodies especially when we are trying to copy

with a chronic illness as well as just trying to live as normal a life as

possible. I haven't been able to read my e-mail for several days because I

have a daughter who is graduating this month and we are busy with all the

year end activities and programs as well as with this course, however when I

get finished with this course I will go through and share the high points of

what I have learned. The greatest thing that I have gotten out of it so far

is the necessity to treat the whole person - the Mind, Body, and

Soul!!!!!!!!!!! So far the course has been wonderful and I hope that it will

not only benefit me but each of you who struggle with this illness as well as

other stresses in our lives.

God Bless you all,

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

I am glad that the program you are in understand the importance of this. It

is critical to the holistic healing process. I feel certain that if I wasn't

as assertive with the development of my health care team, I would not have

adequate care for my mind, body, and soul. It takes a lot of energy to find

the people whom we can place the care of our lives to. The two physicians

that have ever voiced the need for holistic healing and the interdependency

of such a medically complex disease has been my Psychiatrist and my pain

doctor.
