Guest guest
Laurie At some point in the future, I expect to be facing the prospect of a bi-lateral hip job (whether resurfacing or thr is yet TBD). I would be very interested in hearing your comments about the recovery process and mobility after the surgery. Have you posted such comments in the past (that may be archived)? Are there other bi-lateral people out there who could offer some perspective of how much more difficult it might be than one side at a time, say 6 months apart? Thanks in advance. Kit in PA. bilateral resurfacing yes, Dr. Mont does bilateral resurfacing, but not on the same day. I hadmy left and right hips done in November; one week apart...he kept me inthe hospital til the second surgery and then I went to the rehab floorfor one week. It is difficult; but it can be done.Laurie__________________________________________________
Guest guest
Kit - Just returned home from Baltimore Saturday evening after Conserve+ surgery by Dr Mont's team. Had right done on 12/20/00 - left done on 1/3/01. Did return home for recovery after 1st surgery. Doing OK - mobility significantly reduced right now due to 2 hips recovering, but I expect that with my regular light exercise program, I will regain mobility a little more each day throughout next week. I am able to get around the house on crutches OK for basic functions. Currentl restrictions are 50% weight bearing for 6 weeks. PT will come to the house tomorrow to begin some programs. Contact me for specifics. Guest guest
Mike - I essentially had bilateral re-surfacing surgery nearly at the same time. Rt on 12/20/00, Lt on 1/3/01. If you would like to hear of my experiences - let me know! Brad B Bilateral Resurfacing I am interested to hear from anyone who has had bilateral resurfacing done in the same operation. I am looking at having this done for OA and from most of the posts I have read here the majority either only had one hip done or both done but in separate operations. What was it like post-op as far as mobility? , crutches or wheelchair? I have read that they get you out of bed as soon as possible but with both hips being done how do you weight bear that early? What was the rehab like and how long did it take before full weight bearing / physical activity? I am a large man at 6'2 " tall weighing 250lbs so I have been told that a bilateral surgery is out of the question unless I can drop a lot of weight but physical activity for me is very limited. About 1 hour in the grocery store is the most walking I can handle before my back and hips don't want to cooperate anymore. I want to get myself into better shape to help with the recovery from sugery and rehab to get me back to work as a police officer since I have already been off work for 2 months. Any information would be much appreciated. Take care all, Mike.

Mike, I was hoping to have both hips done at the same time, but the surgeon said he wants to do them separately, approx. 6 weeks apart in my case. I am large also, and the explanation I was given is that the chance for a blood clot is much higher if they are done bilaterally (a lot has to do with our size). The recovery will certainly be easier doing them separately as well (at least with the time frame I have) as I will be at least 75% weight bearing on the first before the second is done. I didn't (and still don't-I'm a big wuss) like the idea of two surgeries, but I realize that it is for my own safety and the recovery will be MUCH easier.
