What a terrible thing to happen. The following statement really stuck out.

My question is why did the firefighters not wait until police arrived and

secured the scene before approaching the victim?

Police say

six firefighters on two crews initially responded to a domestic violence

call.

As shots rang out, two were hit by gunfire, and the other four were pinned

until

police arrived.

Condolences to all in Lexington. What a nightmare.

In our city, Medic units are a valuable yet limited resource. All

firefighters are EMT-IV certified and we are several of our engines are

staffed with a paramedic firefighter at all times for ALS calls. We

dispatch a first responder on all medical calls except Alpha level

responses. For those of you unfamiliar with the EMD cards, that's the calls

that are just un-descript sick persons, non-recent or non-traumatic falls

and injuries, etc... The only Alpha level call which gets a first responder

is a seizure.

That being said, some...not all of our engines have a tanker truck which

goes wherever the engine goes due to areas with limited hydrants. If

Lexington is anything like that, they could conceivably had six firefighters

respond to the call initially as a first responding unit. More than likely

though (if any of you can imagine this) the news probably reported it

inaccurately and didn't distinguish between firefighters and medics. So in

fire math, 4 firefighters = 1 engine company. 1 Paramedic + 1 EMT (who are

probably fire dept employees) = 1 Medic unit. 1 Engine Company + 1 Medic

unit = 6 firefighters in inaccurate news reports.

Just an educated guess.

> My question is why firefighters were going in the first place. I

understand using firemen as first responders (such as CPR, MVA, or calls

w/children injured/sick) but I do not agree with sending firemen and the

300,000 dollar truck to every ems call out there.
