Guest guest
, At Mayo they said to drink at least three 8 oz. glasses of skim per day, for the calcium and the protein. isen't t it weird the different things we are told. I drink maybe 16 ozs with my espresso per day, and it does not effect my loss. I am still losing at 16 months post op. I am down to 158 lbs at 5'7 and I think I may make the ideal weight of 140. I never dreamed I would get down this far. The best news is my diabetes is totally under control. I will enjoy my latte's for now, since I may be intolerant in a couple years, but I just thought I would pass along what I was told. By the way, you and your husband have done wonderful, and I love your comments on why you enjoy life better now. Well said. Jan C. 3-11-98 RNY milk? Milk is lactose. Lactose is sugar. Same as sucrose (white sugar). Or fructose (fruit sugar). And all those other " oses " . It's a high calorie liquid, so slithers right on past all the obstructions we paid so dearly to be installed. I have a distal gastric bypass, so it makes me EXTREMELY sorry I messed with it, so I'm safe from it. LOTS of bypasses (RNY) can't tolerate milk. Since 80% of Caucasians are lactose intolerant by age 40 (age 18 if not Caucasian), it isn't that hard to give up. Knowing that for us, it can cost us up to 50 lbs. NOT lost, our doctor forbids it and classes it exactly the same as sugar. We use high quality proteins that are lactose free, low in sugars, fats, carbs, etc. So, we have no loss from it, except the sugar. I know what you mean, though, as I was a 3 glass per meal drinker. I miss hot chocolate chip cookies, straight out of the oven, chips a-meltin', with ice cold milk that's been frozen, with ice crystals in it? Ahhh. But I've never missed it bad enough to give up being a size 3! Guest guest
...Milk actually isn't lactose..it has lactose in it...I don't drink it..feel like I would need to sign my will before I downed a glass..you know what I mean..of all the things that cause me pain..Milk is the BIGGEST culprit..and..supprisingly, I've learned to exist without it (lol..that negative re-enforcement can do wonders!) I can do cottage cheese though...a good source of protein..and the lactose is removed from the milk product during the process of making the cottage cheese PS: you WOULD have to mention those evil chocolate chip cookies and a COLD glass of milk..huh?...LOL..you know what?...since I CAN'T have the milk..I wouldn't enjoy the chocolate chip cookies! Guest guest
Originally my surgeon's plan said no milk ever, but recently they have rethought that and modified it to include milk in 4oz amounts as part of our fluid intake, but not with meals. The reason it was eliminated originally was due to the high sugar content of milk. However, there are other good benefits that made them change their mind but limit the quantity drank at once so a person hopefully doesn't dump on it. We are told to use skim milk only though. Guest guest
hi tanya, some surgeons don't allow milk, since the lactose is a kind of sugar. mine did, in 4 oz portions, & good, because i drink milk every day. light soy milk saved my life as an early postie, it never made me sick. it was bizarre, but some days i would get sick & some days not, & i was eating the same exact menu... lori h. > can you drink milk? if not - why > > > visit our website > www.geocities.com/tanyarn96/countryside.html
Guest guest
I drink skim milk without any problems. Some have a lot of difficulty with lactose intolerance following surgery though.
