Guest guest
up to two pounds a week is healthy. I'll tell you why. For someone to loose say 4 lbs a week that person has cut roughly 12,000 calories a week from their diet. If you continue that your body all of a sudden says holy crap, i'm starving. And starts conserving your fat and then burns muscle. Leading to fatigue and all systems in your body literally fighting to keep every calorie. It starts storing fat as energy not knowing what you will do next. And that makes it harder the 'next time' you try to loose because your body has memory of it. It also depends on how your loosing it too. If you are going into starvation and dipping below 1200 calories (the absolute minimum for anyone to survive), your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to it's fat for dear life and rid it's muscle. However this does not apply to a person who has a lot of weight to lose because it will come of quicker at the start for someone with lots to lose. > I've read that the most fat weight you can lose per week is 1 and > 1/4th pounds, and anything else would be muscle. At my weight, 3/4 of a pound a week isn't that big of a deal, > but I'd still like to get this straight, does anyone here know how > many lbs of fat u can lose in a week? Guest guest
Hello, A healthy loss is 1/2 to 2 lbs a week. The reason is, if you lose any more than that you start losing muscle and you don't want to do that. It does damage to your metabolism, making it harder to lose in the long run. It might not seem like much but it adds up. The less you have to lose the slower it will go. It is simple math really. A pound is roughly 3500 calories. You need at least 1200 cals a day for best body function. If you go below that, you lower your metabolism because the body goes into defense mode. It wonders when it will get food next so it starts to conserve, lowering your metabolism. The other thing is, you can only workout soo much. If you over do it you get burned out and fatigued and then set yourself up for injury. So, the best weight loss method is a combo of cutting calories and increased activity. All things in moderation. The thing is, it is important to think about the big picture. Not just getting the weight off but developing habits that you can do for a lifetime so the weight will stay off. I don't recall seeing you post before? Are you new? If so, welcome! How tall are you? How much do you want to lose? I ask because 140 sounds pretty good to me! :-) I'm Gena, 38, married 19 years, have 2 girls, 19 and almost 13. In Oct 2000 I was 284 lbs, so far I am about 208. I have learned it is important to be be patient and work on habits and behaviors. Learning to eat better. Getting off the " diet " mentality and working on things that you can keep doing. I hope that answers your question. Gena > I've read that the most fat weight you can lose per week is 1 and > 1/4th pounds, and anything else would be muscle. Guest guest
Yep I DID post an introduction when I joined, but that was quite a while ago. I'm 18, 5'6 " 140 and I want to lose 18 pounds.. I look fine, but I guess I just have this wierd 'skinny girl' fantasy lol. I used to weigh 185 when I was in highschool and it was just terrible the way people treated me, so I think weight will always be an issue for me..... I'm also hoping to go to college this fall, and it would be nice to finally KNOW that I look fine, without a doubt. Anyway it was nice to meet ya. And thnx to everyone who responded to my post, I'll add the 1.25lb/week thing to my weight-loss-myth list ~Mandy > > Hello, > A healthy loss is 1/2 to 2 lbs a week.
