Guest guest
Someone earlier today wanted to know about medications, I think, those that had made one's CMT progress? Well, during my teens the neuros at UCLA had me taking Ritalin for fatigue. And yes, it helped with that, so I could get through school and enjoy dances and parties. However, my first or second year of college (that would have been 5-6 years on Ritalin by then) I developed tremors in my hands and arms. I abruptly was told to stop taking Ritalin, so I did. Then, along with the tremors came the beginning of chronic insomnia, which I still have. I don't know for sure the damage, if any Ritalin did to my CMT, but I suspect some. I also feel that all the alcohol and pot I consumed in my 20's moved my CMT progression onward. Once I stopped that, at 27, it seems I have been on a CMT plateau. (am 48 now) I have since learned to sleep better (most nights) and now only take Elavil which helps me live a quality life and seems to help tremors, fatigue, sleep and balance. Guest guest
I don't think an anti-inflammatory does much if anything to slow the progress of RA. I'm not medically trained so I could be wrong. Most medications can have an effect on the liver or kidneys or both so most of us get regular blood work. Mine is every two months but I'm on Methotrexate and Remicade so I have a higher chance of liver problems than the average. If I start to have problems we want to identify it early so we can avoid any real damage. Blood work can also show many possible problems with general health. God bless. -----Original Message----- From: Rheumatoid Arthritis [mailto:Rheumatoid Arthritis ] On Behalf Of Lollipop girl Sent: Monday, July 17, 2006 7:25 PM Rheumatoid Arthritis Subject: Re: medication question Thank you for the prompt reply I appreciate it. So I understand that the Lodine is an anti-inflamatory, but does it also slow the progression of the RA? Also, why does my dr do blood work every 3 months? what is that supposed to do?-
Guest guest
Hi Lollipop girl, I won't lecture you about your meds. I'm 28. When I was dx'd at 22 (after 13 doctors & 4 months of symptoms) I sincerely doubted that I really had arthritis. Actually I think, in a way, I took the meds exactly as they were prescribed in the in order to prove the doctor wrong. So, I understand when, at your (our) age, not taking meds a little. I wouldn't think it was laziness, just an honest doubt that arthritis is the culprit. Were you dx'd by a rheumy. I hasn't convinced after my first visit to the rheumy. However, when he sent me home after the 1st visit with a bag full of literature about arthritis, every symptom sounded like my problems. If you are prescribed 2 meds you should like both of them, in by biased opinion. Afterall, what good is controlling the pain if you are not slowing down the progression? Guest guest
If you don’t want to take meds you might try an elimination diet to see if at least part of your problems are related to food sensitivity. However, joint damage can occur quite rapidly and for most people it takes many months to find out if an elimination diet will help. You should be under the care of a rheumatologist to guard against joint damage while looking for alternative treatments. I can’t help with the cracking joints. I have heard that some of it is harmless but I don’t know if all joint cracking is harmless. God bless. http://www.drcranton.com/elimination_diet.htm From: Rheumatoid Arthritis [mailto:Rheumatoid Arthritis ] On Behalf Of Lollipop girl Sent: Sunday, July 23, 2006 6:05 PM Rheumatoid Arthritis Subject: Re: medication question well the thing is too that my stomach is SOOOOOOOOO sensitive.. i have IBS too.. so (not to sound graphic) everything causes me cramps and diarea... thats another reason I hate taking ANY medicines.
