Guest guest
Sally: All great reasons for the surgery, but the one I can most relate to is the grandchildren. I now have two wonderful granddaughters - ages 4 and 11 months. I was still pre-surgery when Olivia was born in 1996. I could not play with her much and I certainly did not trust myself to carry her up and down a flight of stairs. It took all my energy to get me up the stairs. Since the surgery in May of 2000, things have greatly improved. I chase the 4 year all over the place and, although I am still pooped when they finally go home (I think that's more of an age thing, though, because so is my skinny husband), I have the stamina to get on going and going and going while they are with me. Of course, I did this for myself first but those to little munchkins played a big role in making a final decision. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
Sally, With a great attitude such as yours, I see you going far with WLS! Dawn Reasons for surgery Hi everyone, Lori's message about chasing after her 3-year-old when she was obese and the scaryness of that situation made me think of the reasons I am having this surgery. First, is for me. Medically, I see ten doctors for various things wrong with me. Although those things are not going to disappear, some of them may be helped significantly. I am also doing it to prevent additional medical problems from appearing which are in my family history; i.e. heart problems, diabetes, breathing problems. Medically for me is the first. Also for me, I would like a better life. I have a wonderful husband who has also gained some weight over the years. He promises to get the junk food out of the house and to go on his own diet with me. We would like to go on trips together and be able to walk. I can't walk right now, both due to the obesity and also due to the obesity impacting on two knee replacements. With less weight, I should be able to walk and do other forms of exercise to not only help me lose weight but to help me feel better. I am not even thinking big trips. A long weekend in the N.H. mountains would satisfy me, but just having some ability to enjoy it without saying, " I can't walk that far " . Lastly, my daughter was married a month ago. They do not plan on a family for a while, but they do want a family. I would like to be able to enjoy my grandchildren, be able to lift them, get on the floor with them, etc. You cannot kneel on knee replacements and with my current weight I can't get on the floor and back up again. If I lost a lot of weight, I might be able to get on the floor and be able to pull myself up, maybe not like the average person with no knee replacements, but just get up as gracefully as possible. I would like to help my daughter with her children. I want to be alive to see my grandchildren. I hope the surgery as a tool works for me, and that I can be successful. Guest guest
Sally and Lois, I can understand kids figuring in on reasons for surgery. I have a 7 yr old son and he is the main reason for me having surgery. I wanted to be around for him and be able to play with him at the park and other things. He has grown up with a " big " mother that always had a hard time doing things. Now I am involved in scouts with him along woth my hubby and can so so much more with him including walking him to his bus stop that is about 1/4 mile away. Guest guest
Hi to Lois and all, I too have a list of reasons for having this surgery. The number one reason for me is how I want to feel both emotionally and physically. I am so tired of being tired and hurting all the time. My knees, back and other joints of a weight bearing nature bother me daily. My energy level is non existent most days. I also don't like my reflection in the mirror. I am sick and tired of being tired after dressing. Pantyhose, girdle, etc., all wear me out. I know that all of these things will change for me after my surgery. I have a two and a half year old granddaughter and I have her every other weekend. She is wonderful and I want to be able to do more things with her than I am able to do now. Hugs to all, Kim from Templeton PS I am still recovering from the flu. It has really knocked me on my butt. I am in Florida right now and will return to MA for a couple of days on Saturday. It is rather cool here right now and I am still not feeling well but I am enjoying my balcony. I am trying to read my mail as often as I can. I had over 500 pieces when I began today. I have mostly been lurking but please know you are all in my thoughts daily. I hope to be back in the swing of things soon.
